Long-term care resident in critical condition after smoking while on supplemental oxygen, fire officials say

They are warning people not to smoke while using oxygen - D-oh!

Windsor Fire and Rescue Services says a long-term care home resident is in critical condition in hospital after her supplemental oxygen triggered a fire while she was trying to smoke.

The service is reminding people not to smoke while using oxygen.

“We highly recommend that you do not smoke while your oxygen is connected anywhere near an open flame,” Chief Fire Prevention Officer John Smith told CBC.

“Oxygen will intensify that fire.”

The incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. on Friday, Smith said. The fire service responded to a report of a wheelchair fire.

The resident was attempting to smoke outdoors.

She was able to escape the burning wheelchair but sustained burns to her face and damage to her respiratory tract from smoke and heat.

A staff member at the home extinguished the fire with an ABC fire extinguisher, Smith said.

"her supplemental oxygen triggered a fire while she was trying to smoke"

There's nothing like living dangerously in the best of both worlds!

“We highly recommend that you do not smoke while your oxygen is connected anywhere near an open flame,”

Pretty sure that has been the warning for many decades now.

The correct sentence would be her respiratory tract was further damaged by smoke after years of previous damage by smoking cigarettes.

I heard that a guy on oxygen had a heart attack at the fishing hole, earlier this week. A guy that witnessed it said they administered CPR, but he was surprised that they didn’t use the defibrillator. That might have gotten a bit sporty on an aluminum dock sitting on the water.

Oxygen will intensify that fire.”

Bit of understatement there if the videos from operating rooms are any indication.

How is that?

Is she still smoking, or did they get the fire completely out?

Not "highly recommend"! Say it:! "If you smoke near oxygen you will start a fire and die."

I highly recommend you put a stamp on your letters before you mail them.

Or how about-
“We highly recommend that you do not smoke if you require supplemental
oxygen”.

Even more tragic as it was AFTER a cosmonaut was incinerated in a high oxygen environment when he wiped up a kitchen spill and the rag got too close to the hotplate.

That should have reminded everyone in the get-into-space-in-a-big-hurry business of the danger.

The path of least resistance might be less than predictable when zapping a soggy kayaker on a wet metal dock.
