It’s a Wonderful Life is NOT a Christmas movie.
Filled with drunkenness, depression, attempted murder, dysfunctional and abusive family relationships, financial failures, theft and embezzlement, suicidal tendencies and more.
Just because it’s tied up at the end with a soapy dopey “Every time a bell rings....” only made it worse.

“It’s a Wonderful Life” is one of the greatest movies ever made — of ANY genre.
The elements you describe tell a real-world story. But the underlying story of hope, resilience and redemption makes it an epic classic.

Yes, it is a dark world there in Pottersville, save for the good hearts of people who changed the future of the town.

Jimmy Stewart was deep in the throes of PTSD when he made that movie. He was a bomber pilot in WW2.
