Rubio orders State Department to change official memo font, citing DEI issue: Official

There's a new serif in town!

The Calibri font is going the way of the typewriter at the State Department after Secretary of State Marco Rubio inked a memo mandating that the agency use only Times New Roman for official communications – and size 14 to boot, according to a department official.

The new directive, which was sent to all diplomats, is the latest action by the Trump administration to roll back diversity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The change is effective immediately, according to the directive.

Two years ago, Rubio’s predecessor, Antony Blinken, switched the State Department font to Calibri, on the recommendation of the State Department’s office of diversity and inclusion, in part to assist individuals with certain visual disabilities, such as low vision and dyslexia.

What’s wrong with caliber type? 14 font is going to use up a lot of paper.

Noooooo

Times New Roman is so pre-2007. It's a relic. It's also a serif font which is meant for printed documents, not for viewing on a computer screen.

Documents viewed on a screen should be in a sans serif font of which Calibri is a good one. Office 2007 came with Calibri as the default font.

Aptos has some advantages such as distinguishing a capital "eye" from a lower case "ell".

We need a new font that offers serif and sans serif versions, the ability to distinguish between capital "eye" and a lower case "ell", and slashes through zeros like Consolas font. A slash through the number seven would help as well.

You joke about Comic Sans but it's recommended for people with certain eyesight difficulties.

Sounds good to me. TNR has always been my favorite font, and size 14 font is kinder to my old eyes.

On the other hand, I have hopes of never again reading any State Department document, for any reason.

Um, anyone who has to read or publish government documents cares - a lot.

Just because you don't deal with it, don't diminish what others have to go through. There are millions of publications just for the State Department alone.

The slash through the seven pre-dated the Nazis. The French in particular used it because of their number one with a very pronounced upstroke.

So you read millions of publications. You must be a stellar speed reader? How’s the comprehension?

The only font with eternal importance is Baptismal.

Now there is a real problem that needed to be fixed. Honestly I think that some in the Trump administration are just looking for ways to looks stupid and sabotage the effort.

Wut???

It's not the quantity, it's the time spent working with them.

People who work in publications can spend months creating and updating documents. Such reviews go through several people for revisions and approvals. Having a user-friendly font is key.

You may never use it, but others can spend a career in government publications - creating, updating, or searching through them.

“”to roll back diversity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives””

Is this a joke? What does type/font have to do with DEI?
