Cornerback is probably the last position I would think you could get away with drunk?

The coaches let him play, or somehow didn't know he was that drunk?

Read Kenny Stabler’s biography “The Snake”. John Madden had a Pirate Ship not an Oakland Raider football team.

I would think the free safety would be the easiest position to play drunk.
In the end it relies on what set is called.
Two strides away and you are “burned!”
The sport, Football, has changed but not for the better.
“Chippy,” has become “Dirty.”
I don’t watch NCAA or NFL games, at all.

This isn’t too surprising... Plenty of players likely play while intoxicated on booze and drugs. Many of them likely do so just to kill the pain associated with the constant injuries.

So... What’s the big deal?

Lawrence Taylor and lots of other high profile players said they were high on cocaine plenty of times during their playing careers. The occasional hot toddy couldn’t do too much more harm.

https://www.twincities.com/2013/01/27/tom-dempsey-former-nfl-kicker-dealing-with-dementia/

Tom Dempsey, the former NFL kicker born without toes on his right foot who in November 1970 — after a long night of drinking and debauchery in the French Quarter of New Orleans — set the league record for the longest field goal in a regular-season game. The 63-yard kick lifted the New Orleans Saints to a 19-17 victory over the Detroit Lions, and, in the process, helped transform Dempsey into something of a folk hero in the city hosting the Super Bowl on Sunday, the rare Saints player to hold a prominent NFL record before the Sean Payton era.

I should have played football.
You can work drunk and still earn big money! If I ever showed up drunk it would’ve been my last day.

from the web:
“Financially, Jammer had a fruitful NFL career. According to contract-tracking sources:

His career earnings are estimated at USD $47,116,664.

His average per year (APY) over his career was around $3.93 million.

The largest cash payment he received in a season was $7,233,330 (2007).

His original rookie contract (signed in 2002) was a 6-year deal worth about $15.6 million (with ~$6 million guaranteed), and a later extension (in 2006) added roughly $31.3 million over 6 years.”

If he was always drunk, maybe no one noticed.

Like me at work. I interviewed drunk and stay drunk all day. no one noticed.... Same when I got my driver’s license.
