In October 2021, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that his social media empire was officially rebranding itself as “Meta” as part of a sweeping company-wide doubling down on virtual reality tech.
The head-scratching pivot has been nothing short of a disaster ever since, from blocky “Horizon Worlds” online environments filled with screeching children to never-ending rounds of layoffs and exorbitant losses.
All told, the company has lost more than $70 billion since the beginning of 2021 on its enormous long-term VR bet, a staggering sum that has left investors itchy and unimpressed as Zuckerberg has failed to convince the public of the high-fidelity virtual spaces he long insisted we’d be choosing to spend most of our time in.
Now, as Bloomberg reports, the company’s executives are eying gigantic budget cuts, as high as 30 percent, for the teams responsible for its Meta Horizon Worlds product and Quest VR headset — another nail in the coffin for Zuckerberg’s obsession that has been a major thorn in the sides of investors for years now. Layoffs could start as soon as January, but final decisions have yet to be made.

He’s an alien lizard 🦎 creature, isn’t he?
Had forgotten about “virtual reality”.
Actual reality since the 2021 rebrand has been more entertaining and compelling than anything “virtual” could have been.
It makes sense that the business community is moving on from VR as a potential profit center.
MSNOW can’t be any worse than MSNBC with that rebranding right? Nowhere go go but up from here, right??? 😂😂😂😂
Most Ponzi schemes eventually come to an end.
VR is just too awkward a technology right now.
Until materials can be made much lighter, and power much more dense, handhelds and goggles will always be niche.
I look at a VR headset and my neck just says 15 minutes or I will make you will regret anything longer.
He also gave up on Global Warming and lost his wife.
He’s having quite a run of “bad luck”.
,,, I was under the impression that he changed the name from Facebook to Meta because Facebook became synonymous with slave trading in the middle east, youth suicides and genaral toxic activity. Get those issues solved in the real world before conquering the virtual world - and it may cost less than $70b to achieve that. Still, Zuckerberg can claim one thing: he’s on par with the UN for taking in a whole lot of money to go very little distance.
I have a Quest 2 vr headset.
I was super excited when I got it but after a few hours I barely have used it since.
Impressive technology but I found it to be something of a pita...
All because nobody was willing to tell the big boss he was crazy.

They need to make it like the Holodeck in Star Trek.
I think the way that you can do it is to go to an arcade in your town, you'll pay $20 to he in the Holodeck for one hour.
If you own a mansion, you can turn your basement into the Holodeck.
Like you said, people are not going to want to put on goggles.
Huh? I hadn't heard about him losing his wife. What's the story on that?
Facebook and Google are worldwide monopolistic advertising companies. Prove me wrong.
Does this mean he’s going to shut it all down?
He flooded Facebook with ads and censured anyone with a conservative view. Still seems to be doing that with the algorythm making posts appear buried at the bottom of the page. To connect with friends and family is very difficult at times, missing quite a lot of conversations, photos, he has no care at all for the people on there who are trying to stay connected to people that matter to them.
,,, there's other ways to let everyone know you've changed your breakfast cereal.
I do realize some people wear a goofy headset and stumble around "hitting a tennis ball" or some such.
Children need to get outside in the sunshine (or snow) and play.
Sorry, confused him with Gates. Techies are like mannikins, hard tell apart.
How’s your Holodeck company doing? Is the stock on fire? ;)
Zuckerberg likely thought people were going to pay for a more “interactive” experience, especially pornography, and that he could capitalize on it.
