VR is just too awkward a technology right now.
Until materials can be made much lighter, and power much more dense, handhelds and goggles will always be niche.
I look at a VR headset and my neck just says 15 minutes or I will make you will regret anything longer.

I think the way that you can do it is to go to an arcade in your town, you'll pay $20 to he in the Holodeck for one hour.
If you own a mansion, you can turn your basement into the Holodeck.
Like you said, people are not going to want to put on goggles.
For me, personally, I would like VT exercise equipment. Instead of just looking at the wall or tv it would be pretty fun being in a fantasy land.
VR is filled with nothing but children pretending to be adults, old people pretending to be young, men pretending to be women, and all of them insane.
