Chronic cannabis use, vomiting and compulsive bathing—symptoms of a hidden syndrome
Medical Xpress / JAMA Network Open ^ | Dec. 3, 2025 | Justin Jackson / James A. Swartz et al

Researchers have found that cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, a vomiting condition tied to chronic cannabis use, rose sharply in US emergency departments between 2016 and 2022 and has stayed elevated.

As of June 2025, nearly half of US residents live in states with legalized recreational cannabis, and policy shifts have expanded adult-use access through legalization, medical programs, and decriminalization. Among cannabis-related harms, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) has been described as a growing concern in clinical and public health settings.

CHS was first identified in 2004 in Australia and remains a syndrome with uncertain etiology. Proposed neurophysiological mechanisms include downregulation of cannabinoid 1 receptors, altered transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 signaling, and disrupted hypothalamic thermoregulation.

CHS has three defined phases. The first two include a prodromal phase of abdominal pain or morning nausea which can last for months or years at a time, and a hyperemetic phase, lasting a few days with recurrent vomiting and potential escalation to "scromiting" where screaming in pain while vomiting can occur.

Within these phases, people with CHS tend to bathe compulsively in hot water, often for hours at a time, as it can relieve symptoms.

In a third, recovery phase, abstinence from cannabis reduces symptoms within a few days or months. Eventually, they will completely disappear.

The existence of CHS was a mystery to clinicians until very recently. Patients with CHS frequently appear in emergency departments and are often tested unnecessarily for a wide variety of conditions, misdiagnosed with cyclic vomiting syndrome or assigned nonspecific gastrointestinal conditions.

The cure for “scromiting” (screaming uncontrollably while vomiting your head off) is to simply stop using your cannabis. If you want to keep your scromiting, please keep puffing your marijuana.

I’m so glad I don’t live in an apartment complex, any longer. I figure scromiting happens a lot in liberal states.

People will get online and brag about how high they are.

These same people would never do the same thing if they were drunk.

The social implications of our not only legalizing but presenting it as harmless are yet to fully unfold but I do not think we will care for the results.

Chronic drug use has negative side effects?

You don’t say!

I doubt that, but to the extent that this is even a real syndrome and not some made-up BS, I would imagine one would have to ingest a ridiculous amount of cannabis to achieve this, something equivalent to a drunk drinking two bottles of whiskey a day, every day, for years. I'm sure there are some weirdos who use that much cannabis, but the vast majority don't.

After spending 25 years responding to idiots who have destroyed their health with frequent pot use... I have learned that mentioning the crap that I saw goes in one ear and out the other of the potheads who post here.

But believe it or not even in a society that basically worships alcohol use, habitual consumption, smoking or vaping marijuana is somehow a bigger threat to most peoples’ health than pickling your brain with alcohol.

Why? Hell, if I know, but it is the God's honest truth.

I don’t recall this among those I knew who partook of the devil’s lettuce. I do remember a few who had coughs that made whooping cough seem like a winter cold. I wonder if they’re related symptoms.

No.

And that was what worried me.

A young person getting high and doing stupid stuff, not smart but expected.

These are adults, in their thirties, with children, getting high and being on line doing stuff like mowing their lawns.

I hate to be a stick in the mud but this does not end well.

Being high does not keep the whirling blades from cutting you.

“downregulation of cannabinoid 1 receptors, altered transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 signaling, and disrupted hypothalamic thermoregulation.“

———————————————————-

As an old Pharmaceutical Rep, I believe that is the primary genesis of the syndrome.

Moderation is key.
Stop deluging your brain with a complex group of psychoactive molecules.

I would rather describe it as abuse.

But, yes, they are destroying themselves.

The vomiting is no big deal. A handful of Twinkies, and they’ll be right as rain.

So what is your definition of frequent pot use? And how did it destroy their health exactly?

I'm open to the idea that serious cannabis abuse can damage health, but of all the chronic users I've known, I've never seen this syndrome or any other serious health consequences that didn't involve other drugs or alcohol as well, so I'm curious as to what your personal experience is.

Drunks try to get online and brag about how drunk they are, but they usually only manage to type out "sjdfghsfhglf//&^%" just before they spill their whiskey on the keyboard.

All smoke is toxic. It amazes me that cigarette smoking is demonized while pot smoking barely gets a shrug. The smoke from both will eventually kill you.

Decades ago I lived in an apartment building that used to be a grand old hotel.

Stoners in every fecking unit, except me.

My dogs were even sick from the constant “ fumes” so I broke the lease 3 months in and moved to a middle of nowhere little rental Craftsman house.

Have not had to live in any “ communal” building since the mid-80s, thank God.

You should visit the free emergency vet forums some time

Every day someone worrying about their mysteriously deathly ill dog and then later, the confession of edibles/etc will get broached and then confessed to.

The vet community sees this “ accidental” animal abuse every day.

Vile.
