Nearly 15 years later, Detroit finally has its statue of RoboCop.
The bronze statue depicting the eponymous cybernetic star of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 set-in-Detroit sci-fi satire was installed in Eastern Market on Wednesday, nearly 15 years after someone proposed it in a viral social media post.
Back in 2011, someone with the Twitter account @MT (no, not us) tweeted at then-Mayor Dave Bing that Detroit should have a statue of the part-man, part-machine cop because “Philadelphia has a statue of Rocky & RoboCop would kick Rocky’s butt.”
“He’s a GREAT ambassador for Detroit,” the tweet continued.
The idea got even more attention after Bing’s office responded to it. “There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop,” Bing tweeted at the time. “Thank you for the suggestion.”

But even Robocop wouldn’t go into Detroit without his weapon.
A monument to defunding the police.
The bronze statue goes missing police on the case.
Scrap dealer knows nothing
Ridiculous, it was just a movie.
Most fitting statue for Detroit would be a pile of dead bodies.
Well they do have a Rocky statue in Philadelphia.
Except the movie was filmed in Dallas…
Maybe a statue of Bobby Layne so that it will break the curse.
“Ridiculous, it was just a movie.”
Hey, when your Detroit, your looking for any win you can find......good thing the Lions are doing well this season......outside of that, I see no redeeming quality for the Motor City.
Remember what Mouth told Data about Detroit in The Goonies? "Sure, it's where Motown started. It also has the highest murder rate in the country."
The Lions aren’t doing that well. The Pistons are, though.
Check this out guys! :-D
Public art done right!
The movie is more like a harbinger of what a sh!thole Detroit is and was, and what it will take to clean it up.
