Trump says Americans may soon pay ‘no income tax’ as White House explores alternative revenue streams

President Donald Trump suggested Tuesday that Americans may "not even have income tax to pay" in the near future, saying tariff-driven revenue could allow for the historic elimination of the federal income tax under his tenure.

Trump told a press gaggle after his cabinet meeting that "at some point in the not too distant future you won’t even have income tax to pay," arguing that revenue the government is collecting under his administration is now "so great… so enormous."

"Whether you get rid of it or just keep it around for fun or have it really low, much lower than it is now, but you won't be paying income tax," Trump added.

If enacted, abolishing income tax would mark the most ambitious overhaul of the American tax system in more than a century. Trump’s repeated public support for replacing income tax with tariffs makes this the most explicit endorsement yet.

Earlier in his second administration, the president floated a tax plan eliminating income tax for individuals earning under $150,000, with tariffs proposed as a replacement.

"It's time for the United States to return to the system that made us richer and more powerful than ever before," the president said back in January. "Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich foreign nations, we should be tariffing and taxing foreign nations to enrich our citizens."

Eliminating the 1040 would require a massive re-write of the entire social welfare system in this country, along with the distribution of what are currently welfare payments who identify as non-refundable credits.

Why not pay off the national debt first?

Need to get rid of the 16th Amendment as part of the deal or the government parasites will later reinstate income tax and go on a spending spree.

In 1994, after the GOP retook Congress, Texas Rep. Dick Armey promised the abolition of the income tax and the IRS. Didn’t happen.

Trust the GOPe/uniparty at your own peril, as of now these redistribution of wealth thieves are putting us in further debt some $2,000,000,000,000 a year.

And this is exactly why those spend-a-holics frequently lose the mid-terms with regularity, voter turnout is anemic for this reason.

How about you just pay off the debt and Give stability to SS and Medicare?

He has my vote, but I want to leave the next generation with at least that stability.

I agree. I am sick and tired of this ‘means testing’ crap.

There are now a dozen items in the tax code that are means tested. It is back-door Socialism Light!

Sounds good, but I don’t know how practical this is. If we stop importing from other countries and bring back manufacturing here, then the money collected from tariffs will be less. Will it be then be enough to support the military, police and other government services? I would be in favor of a flat tax, say 5% - 10% depending on income. Much simpler filing. Takes me half day to do taxes every April and I hate it. Have to down a couple bourbons afterwards.

Whether or not I do is immaterial. I have paid high taxes my entire life.

The ROI isn’t there.

My question still stands: Why means test this? It implies that somebody has decided you have quite enough assets, so you don’t deserve this relief.

So... We finally paid for WW 1... Before World War 1 personal income taxes didn’t exist in most countries.

Taxes were levied on land owners, businesses and through import and export taxes... I.e. Tariffs. Then some politician and several rich people decided that instead of the rich paying for the war... The people should pay for it. And we’ve been paying personal income taxes ever since.

Without ending the filibuster it’ll be a no starter. The party of violence and corruption need that revenue stream.

HR 25, the FairTax.
It makes more sense than any income tax. And, it puts the citizens (all of them) on the same playing field. It dumps the IRS.

“...a flat tax, say 5% - 10% depending on income”

That’s the rub, half the population does not pay any income tax. And when the dems take over they will be unstoppable in taking money from income and spending it for programs overseas like they always do, rubber-stamped by RINOs.
