The White House has paused all immigration applications from 19 countries and canceled citizenship ceremonies across the US, citing national security and public safety concerns.
The freeze could affect more than 1.5 million people who had asylum applications pending and more than 50,000 who received asylum grants under the Biden administration, The New York Times reports.
President Donald Trump is also considering expanding the travel ban to more than 30 countries, according to the New York Post.
The new policy memorandum, released Tuesday night, cites last week’s 'terror attack' in D.C. where Afghan man Rahmanullah Lakanwal was arrested for allegedly killing one National Guard member and wounding another.
The ban applies to citizens of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen while the restricted access applied to people from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.
It puts a stop to all immigration related activities, including a temporary suspension on the completion of citizenship ceremonies, involving legal permanent residents of the 19 countries, per CBS News.
'The Trump administration is making every effort to ensure individuals becoming citizens are the best of the best. Citizenship is a privilege, not a right,' US Citizenship and Immigration Services spokesman Matthew Tragesser.

She notes that Hizbullah and Syria, both sponsored by Iran, continue to bolster their status as the world’s major source of the amphetamine-based drug Captagon. However, since Saudi Arabia banned the import of Lebanese produce earlier this year, Hizbullah has had to divert its Captagon shipments through transit countries to obscure the country of origin. West Africa has become a preferred option, especially counties with large Lebanese communities, such as Cote d’Ivoire, where Lebanese control a large part of the economy, as well as Togo and Congo.

Donald Trump does not believe that automatic U.S. citizenship is a “right” for children born in the U.S. to parents who are in the country illegally or on temporary visas.
Trump views US citizenship as a “sacred trust” and “priceless and profound gift” that should be tied to shared heritage, obligations, rather than an automatic right by virtue of being born on U.S. soil.

The commander-in-chief blasted the prior administration for its open border policy put in place by an “incompetent president.” His holiday greeting also took aim at the judges who are “on a mission to keep murderers, drug dealers, rapists, gang members and released prisoners from all over the world in our country” so they can commit crimes again.”
“All protected by these USA hating judges who suffer from an ideology that is sick and very dangerous for our country,” he said. “Fear not, we have made great progress over the last 4 months and America will soon be safe and great again!” Trump vowed that the country is making progress and heading in the right direction.
Immigration MUST be halted from ALL countries, period.
