American Gen Z Parents Are Going Abroad to Give Birth—and They’re Not Looking Back
Vice ^ | May 7, 2025 | Ashley Fike

Gen Z is hopping on planes for more than adventure—they’re doing it to have babies. A growing number of young American parents are choosing to give birth outside the U.S., often in countries with better healthcare, more generous parental leave, and cheaper delivery costs.

According to a new survey from Greenback Expat Tax Services, more than one in four Gen Z expats have already given birth abroad—and nearly two-thirds say they’re planning to.

Among all U.S. expats surveyed, 54% had already had a child while living abroad. Millennials lead the charge with nearly 3 in 5 reporting overseas births, but Gen Z is right behind—28% have already done it, and 63% are thinking about it.

Medical care quality, citizenship benefits, delivery costs, and leave policies ranked highest on the list of priorities. Around 80% of parents found the birth process more affordable abroad. Many also considered the long-term perks: countries offering birthright citizenship or dual nationality can give kids access to better travel, education, and global work options. Three in four expats said they’d pick a birth country specifically for these benefits.

Not everyone is completely sold. Nearly 1 in 3 expats said they’d consider returning to the U.S. for childbirth to guarantee American citizenship for their baby. About 47% said family or friends pressured them to go that route. But many are standing firm—more than 1 in 5 said they’d still opt for giving birth abroad.

Unfortunately, US leads the developed world in maternal death.

Gotta link? Don’t be a drive by ... post a link to go with your ‘facts’.

Maybe post jabs.

Again...these spoilt Gen Zers can stay abroad!

No need to look back.

The term “maternal death” was invented by the communistic WHO.

Aha ... Commonwealth Fund ...

Reads JUST like SOCIALISM, Condi ... “common good” ... equitable system ...

The Commonwealth Fund was established in 1918 with the broad charge to enhance the common good. Its founder, Anna M. Harkness, is among the first women to start a private foundation.

Today, the mission of the Commonwealth Fund is to promote a high-performing, equitable health care system...

(Not a good look, here.)

And, your “French” friend best stay in France, to deliver babies ... no more anchor babies needed, here.

Why link to a pro-abort foundation as a red herring?

For a pro-life perspective, here - pinging Morgana too :) :

What Denmark can teach us about reducing infant and maternal mortality

Though Denmark does not uphold the right to life for preborn children, the country fares better than the U.S. when it comes to maternal and infant mortality rates; there are several reasons for this.

Denmark prioritizes a midwifery model of care over a medical model of care.

In Denmark, prenatal care is taxpayer-funded. In addition, more leave is available to new parents than that which is offered in the U.S. (Paid leave in

Denmark varies according to employment.)

Mothers in Denmark receive frequent postpartum home visits from nurses to assess infant and mother health and breastfeeding concerns; this is very limited in the United States.

Healthcare in the US used to be #1 in the world for the common citizen.

We were literally the envy of the world.

In a broad range of medical conditions, the newest and best, the most qualified personnel, newest medications, newest equipment was available in the US and you can have it YOUR WAY. You were a customer.

Not today.

Today we have crap care.

In many aspects WORSE than some of the social health care systems abroad.

Why?

We have created the worst of both worlds!!!

Through the government defining the “standard of care” we get crappy cost managed health care like in every other socialized health care system. Conveyor belt health care pretending to be quality, but really just designed to control costs.

Behind the curtain, the NIH, CDC, DEA, FDA define what you get, when, and how.

BUT- we allow private doctors, private hospitals, private pharma, and medical device manufacturers to often have monopolies and set their own prices.

We have crappy socialized health care at the maximum cost the market will bear.

And this is where things get really interesting. Most socialized health care systems like in Europe allow for a true private health care system to exist and flourish in parallel to the public health care system. But in the US there is no escaping the “standard of care.”

Insurance won't pay, doctors and hospitals are afraid to side step, so you have a blanket that covers nearly everyone.

To escape it, you have to leave the country or be super rich.

Then, have your babies in Denmark, if you like their *system* so much.

And one more point: Rural Americans who live in ‘maternity deserts’ face obstacles in accessing to maternity care, especially emergency pregnancy care etc…

https://goodfaithmedia.org/the-shamefulness-of-maternity-care-deserts-in-the-u-s/

“A 2017 study published in Health Affairs revealed that 9% of rural counties lost hospital obstetric services between 2004 and 2014, leaving almost half of rural counties without services. As a result, women must travel 45 minutes or more to access these basic health care services, including the delivery of a child.”

“We are also seeing a tremendous rise in maternal mortality rates across the U.S.”

The NHS is really bad and you're stuck with it unless you're truly wealthy.

Our healthcare isn't perfect but usually there's enough flexibility and yes, you'll have to navigate using insurance to get what you need.

🤦🏼‍♀️

Well, they could all move to Denmark.

What is the point of the drivel you're posting, Condo?

The title of your thread is that Gen Zers are going abroad to have their babies....which I find to be preposterous ... but, let them all go abroad, if it's 'so much better' there.

After all ... they're 'not looking back'. 😂

3 of our 4 children were born at home, with no OBGYN during the entire pregnancy (except when we got scans). Just a midwife. So cheap too. And the other kids got to cut the cord. Special memory for entire family, and Mrs. Montag was so much more comfortable than the hospital horror of #1.
