It is perfectly legal to fly with a gun, as long as it is properly declared at check-in and in an approved locked case, and in the checked (not carry-on) baggage.
‘Radical’ is a redundant adjective when used to define an Islamist because Islam is by definition a radical death cult that teaches its believers from birth to use the sword to kill all of Allah’s non-believers. The Biden administration claims that Sarah’s killer was vetted doesn’t mean a thing because Lakanwal was an Islamist. That factor alone should have kept him out of this country.

We don’t know what was going on inside his head at any one specific time. We probably never will because what he says from here on in will be as advised by lawyers. We can hope he spilled some beans to other people, but apparently he was pretty quiet.
Really impossible to say how well he was vetted. Having been high up on our collaborator list, I imagine he was given the benefit of the doubt in the shameful chaos of our withdrawal. He was given a lot of assistance here, but somehow it got cut off, and he was becoming destitute. Maybe his work permit expired and Uber took notice all of a sudden with the crackdown on illegals.
Just how and when he snapped and why he figured such a radical killing was the way to go out blazing is anybody’s guess.
