Lavish new Broadway show closes prematurely... after its A-List star hailed Charlie Kirk in wake of his assassination

Kristin Chenoweth's new Broadway show will close months earlier than expected amid slow ticket sales, shocking reviews and the star's comments about slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk - leading some to speculate her support for Kirk's family got the play cancelled.

The Queen of Versailles, which just opened on November 9, will hold its final performance on January 4 after previously having dates listed through March 29.

Chenoweth, best known for playing Glinda in the original stage production of Wicked, was the target of intense criticism in September after Kirk's assassination for showing sympathy to his family in a social media post.

'I'm. So. Upset. Didn't always agree, but appreciated some perspectives,' the 57-year-old wrote on Instagram.

'What a heartbreak. His young family. I know where he is now. Heaven. But still.'

The comments by Chenoweth, who has a large LGBT following, sparked outrage from fans who inundated her with critical comments.

The Broadway icon told the The Hollywood Reporter this month that the backlash 'almost broke' her.

'It was tough on me, but I'm not going to answer any questions about it because I dealt with it,' she said of the Kirk controversy.

Chenoweth's role in the play, which is based on a 2012 documentary about a Florida couple seeking to build a luxurious abode just before the 2008 financial crisis, had been in the works for five years.

'I dare say I just think it's a very topical piece,' she told the Hollywood Reporter.

'People will have things to say about it, whether they're good or bad.'

The show began previews on October 8 following a successful stint at the Emerson Colonial Theater in Boston.

This is a perfect example of "The left eats its own.” It is a common political expression and critique used to describe infighting, purity politics, and the internal criticism that occurs within left-leaning political groups or movements. It suggests that the left is more likely to turn on its own members for perceived ideological impurity or minor disagreements than the right is.

Meaning and Usage

Purity Politics: The phrase often refers to a perceived tendency within the left to engage in "purity tests," where individuals or groups are scrutinized and sometimes ostracized for failing to meet a strict, often shifting, standard of ideological alignment.

Internal Conflict: It highlights the idea that the left is composed of numerous, sometimes competing, interest groups (e.g., trade unionists, environmentalists, LGBT advocates) that struggle to unite, leading to internal conflict over priorities and strategies.

Consequences: The result, as argued by those who use the phrase, can be self-destruction or a loss of focus on a common external opponent, which can weaken the movement's overall effectiveness and ability to achieve power.

Historical Parallel: Some commentary draws parallels to historical revolutionary movements, such as the French Revolution's Reign of Terror or the Russian Revolution, where revolutionaries eventually turned on one another (e.g., the reference to Robespierre and Trotsky).

They hate anyone who doesn’t instantly agree with any perversion they want to engage in.

More likely, the play just sucked. Ticket sales reflected that, so it was time to cut losses and bail out.

“Seriously?”

No kidding! Who would write such a play in the first place and who would pay to go see that?

The left killed common human decency and will have none of it. Chenoweth’s experience a perfect example.

I had a brief personal interaction with Kristin Chenoweth on Twitter back when Trump was running in 2016. She was “woke” then, trying to show her bonafides to the left while still maintaining what she thinks is a Christian witness.

I don’t doubt her sincerity, but I do question her grasp of how the world really works.

She is now discovering how hateful the left can be...she showed sympathy for a murdered man and his family, and her homosexual followers have decided to crush her career.

I hope she realizes the truth: her “friends” in the theatre community don’t really like her—they want her to be enslaved to their ideology.
