Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Monday urged Americans to dress better a way to alleviate stress while traveling during the holiday season.
Since the end of the government shutdown, Duffy has repeatedly claimed that air travelers have become more unruly and agitated in recent years. Part of his plan to return to a more courteous period of air travel is to emphasize the significance of dressing well on planes. The secretary has lamented the trend of travelers dressing in “pajamas” to make themselves more comfortable.
During a Monday press conference, Duffy theorized how improved dress could result in improved behavior in the sky:
But I think we have to think about, how do we do a better job? How do we maintain some of that frustration we have as we travel this Thanksgiving season? Maybe we should say a “please” and “thank you” to our pilots and to our flight attendants.
I think — again, I call this maybe “dressing with some respect.” Whether it’s a pair of jeans and a decent shirt, I would encourage people to maybe dress a little better, which encourage encourages us to maybe behave a little better. Let’s try not to wear slippers and pajamas as we come to the airport. I think that’s positive.

Duffy is correct. I fly only first class now for that exact reason.
That scenario is repeated daily on thousands of flights around world - charter flights on smaller jets.
My personal experience confirms your point….im happy to say.
I’d dress better if I didn’t have to expect to partially disrobe and be groped by TSA
Back in the 90s, I often flew in a suit so I could go directly to the client office from the airport, but there was a reliably safe place to store a jacket back then and we weren’t shoehorned into our seats either. And no TSA.
It’s because of people like Ahmad and Mediaite that we have to dress like a slobs when we fly. It takes less time to take off our shoes and belt and disrobe for the perverts at the TSA to administer the anal exam.
That was Eastern Airlines in the 1970s .
Peoples express destroyed travel.
I went to high school in the 60’s. If the teachers or administrators thought your skirt or dress was too short, you had to kneel on the floor and the hem had to reach the floor. The boys had to wear shirts with collars and absolutely no jeans, only slacks.
Male teachers wore suits and ties and women wore dresses.
I can only do what I can do. Brighten the corner where you are.
Look around the airport net time you travel. Do you think 1 out of a thousand of your fellow travelers know what Mediaite is or what the National Review is, much less care?
(By the way, do you blame Mediaite for reporting Duffy’s comments without a single word in tis report criticizing him?)
Was the golden age of travel when airfare was too expensive for most people? Absolutely.
I went to a private school in the 70s and 80s with the same dress code.

We have experienced your “Word to the wise”.
Pulled out of a mob of people all trying to board at the same time, we were only distinguished by our business attire.
Since we were traveling on travel agent reduced rate fare, we were required to wear suit or dress for women and coat and tie for men.
When they singled us out, I told my husband that we were probably being bumped off the flight because it was so full.
We were very surprised to find that they moved us up to first class.
It was a lovely time to fly .
I think standards dropped with
competition
and lowering standards by the airlines .
Catering and hiring to the LaShelka Washingtons killed the industry .
Sean Duffy might the amalgam of Cicero, James Madison, and Albert Schweitzer, but his day job is secretary of
transportation.
When it comes to passenger behavior and dress, he has all the persuasive power of any of his predecessors.

I wouldn’t hve phrased it tue way he did. Not sure why this was so important to require speaking about.
I know his point however. Don’t look like you’re a fat slob frump and just woke up, and you’re wearing not really appropriate stuff for being outside your house; save the rest of us from seeing you like that.

Yes! What the trash don’t understand is that THEY THEMSELVES are treated better if their appearance is better.
Pre-9/11 when seat assignments were more loose, I was moved to first class a couple of times when wearing my winter white “lucky suit”. (Not like the lucky hat the drug mule wore in “Goodfellas”.)
