Duffy Urges Americans to Dress Better While Flying: ‘Encourages Us to Behave a Little Better’

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Monday urged Americans to dress better a way to alleviate stress while traveling during the holiday season.

Since the end of the government shutdown, Duffy has repeatedly claimed that air travelers have become more unruly and agitated in recent years. Part of his plan to return to a more courteous period of air travel is to emphasize the significance of dressing well on planes. The secretary has lamented the trend of travelers dressing in “pajamas” to make themselves more comfortable.

During a Monday press conference, Duffy theorized how improved dress could result in improved behavior in the sky:

But I think we have to think about, how do we do a better job? How do we maintain some of that frustration we have as we travel this Thanksgiving season? Maybe we should say a “please” and “thank you” to our pilots and to our flight attendants.

I think — again, I call this maybe “dressing with some respect.” Whether it’s a pair of jeans and a decent shirt, I would encourage people to maybe dress a little better, which encourage encourages us to maybe behave a little better. Let’s try not to wear slippers and pajamas as we come to the airport. I think that’s positive.

This government sponsored inflation is economically choking people off and this stooge wants them to wear better clothing to travel on winged greyhound buses. Amazing...

Roll out the red carpet for tens of millions from the 3rd world then cry when people from the 3rd world show up at the airport dressed like they’re in the 3rd world.

And now sports have gone to heck like so much else.

The airlines treat people like animals.

That’s no excuse for people to then act like animals, but the two are related.

I wonder if Sec. Duffy is having a chat with the airlines regarding that.

People used to wear a suit to Baseball games.

At my Father's (public) high school in the early 1940s, every morning, the principal waited at the entrance and inspected every boy's trousers, coat and tie as they entered. If the clothes didn't pass muster, the boy was sent home to change

Even though his mom was a widower (my grandfather died of his WWI wounds) and the family barely got by, she, (nor any other parents) never complained that it somehow created an undue burden on them

Whenever I fly I usually dress nice (khakis and a button down), but why? Going to and through the airport is miserable. I have to take off my shoes, belt, empty my pockets, get scanned and sometimes groped by the TSA. Once I’ve gone through all that, I get wait for every other drooling moron to shuffle aboard their aircraft and take forever to stow their shit. Once I finally board and find my (ever shrinking) seat, there’s a decent chance that the middle aged white sweat-hog in the seat next to me is going to pour over the armrest and intefere in whatever passes a personal space I have left. At this point I don’t give a damn, I’d rather dress somewhat comfortably after putting up with all the aforementioned crap. Until Mr. Duffy goes through all that crap over the course of years, he can go to hell.

I absolutely despise post 9/11 flying.

Jeans and a polo shirt is my usual office attire. During the summer, golf shorts are worn by many men, led by our CEO.

I wore a tie yesterday for a nephew’s wedding, first time in 5 years. I realized I hadn’t missed it.

One time my hubby and I were bump up to first class ( when first class was really first class) because we were dressed nicely.

It can’t hurt to look polished.

At least ban flip-flops. But I digress, I don’t fly anymore.

I am sure he is referencing tube tops and pajamas: and worse that people, usually women show up to airports to fly in.

I disagree. The entire world needs to start dressing better.

Humanity looks like it’s at one long softball gamer.

I am with you there. I last flew in 2002 and unless I move out of the country, I doubt I will ever fly again.

Yup..

I learned this at age 18 flying off to university in 1982.

Wearing a suit becaue it was easier than packing it. Got upgraded.

(I did look a little older than 18, never got carded at the liquor store)

I used to look sharp in a jacket and Danner boots on my way to WY. (Had to go international terminal at dfw to JHx)

When I flew I dressed in layers, cotton clothing I could comfortably be stuck in for hours if need be, and comfortable footwear. Cotton wrinkles, but if I looked like Lt. Columbo I didn’t give a rat’s hairy hind end. Comfort and safety were paramount.

I own a dozen or so suits, two dinner jackets, and fifteen sports coats.

That said, you and I are in a very small minority who believe that, “the entire world needs to start dressing better.”

And wanting others to come around to our way of thinking is tilting at windmills.

Maybe if the political, Hollywood, and ruling classes had to fly part 121 Air Carrier Operations instead of private jets, the air travel standards would improve.

You used to dress like you were somebody when you flew. I worked in the aviation industry in the late eighties and we would often fly to other airports to repair aircraft. One of the older mechanics always wore a suit and tie when he flew. He was one of the last.

Not really. I am usually sporting a button down shirt and a camel hair sportcoat when I go out. A gentleman should dress like one.

I’m on board. But do you think that the great unwashed would give a moment’s attention to the apparel recommendations of a cabinet secretary?

I’d go the other way. Casual Fridays for pilots and crew.
