Impossible sounding, and often untrue, stories about the famous have been around for as long as there have been celebrities. Still, as you'll see in the following countdown of Rock Music's 25 Craziest Conspiracy Theories, this particular kind of superstar buzz exploded once we took off on the information superhighway.
One of the older examples predates the internet, as fans openly wondered whether Paul McCartney had been replaced by a lookalike prior to 1967's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. But fast forward a couple of decades, and it gets really weird: A conspiracy theorist later emerged who actually thought the Beatles never existed in the first place.
More confusingly, a few of these nutty notions have turned out to be totally true. Yes, Rolling Stones stalwart Keith Richards did once snort his father's ashes – but that doesn't make it any less crazy.
Have These Conspiracy Theories Been Debunked?
Teams of web-based sleuths have worked to validate or debunk these claims. Most follow a similarly outlandish line of inquiry until they are found to be untrue, but that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from spinning.
Message boards and chat rooms eventually gave way to social media, and now pop-culture paranoia simply abounds. Many worked very, very hard to disbelieve what they saw with their own eyes – and this was before AI made that increasingly difficult.
Ever wondered which of these stories is true – or, more crucially, which of them aren't? Here a ranked look back at Rock Music's 25 Craziest Conspiracy Theories:

I liked that movie. Off the wall humor.
Two weeks ago was the 54th anniversary of the release of Zeppelin IV....
54 years later yet none of the members of Zeppelin, none of the mixers of the album and not a single person at Sunset Studios in LA where the album and Stairway to Heaven was assembled have come forward to say, “yeh- it happened”....
Didn’t they re-open that investigation a few years ago?
I’m a massive Zappa fan.
Frank was very clear that his doctor missed the cancer.
However, I’m reminded of a post someone made on MLK Day post-pandemic, in response to the claim that the FBI had recordings of King laughing while a woman was raped. The post went like: “I may have believed that story previously. But after the pandemic, and seeing how the FBI can go rogue, I don’t trust that recording or anything the FBI wrote about King.”
I think the probability that the govt had Frank offed is infinitesimally small.
….but it’s not zero.
Yeah. I believe they had a death-bed confession from the (alleged) killer.
Keith Moon too?
Stairway to Heaven is one of my favorite songs of the 1960s, so I hope this isn't true.
I doubt it.
1) If you play “Stairway to Heaven” backwards you will hear satanic messages....
If you play a country song backwards, you get your truck back, your wife back and your dog back.
Yoko hired Chapman to kill John.
How else do you explain she was standing right next to him, and not one bullet for her?
I was curious about #7. Dylan is said to have swiped Dave Van Ronk’s painstakingly developed arrangement of Lord Randall, btw.
The only other possibility is that the gun jammed, but even that’s farfetched, because the killer would definitely want to kill her first. “This is for Don’t Worry Kilgo!”
When i was a kid the song “Love Rollercoaster “ had an audible scream during the song, and the rumor was that someone was murdered in the studio during the recording.
I remember that one.
I saw a few minutes on a TV Friday night!
John Wayne.
I thought 18 was true. David Carradine went that way.
Anyone remember the one a girl was killed in studio during the recording of the OJays ? Roller Coaster?
Yeah, I can’t count how many times I have watched it through the years.
Really funny movie ;^)
