His generation or the “Elite” anyhow saw the advent of thermonuclear weapons as the impetus for a world body that would oversee their development. This was planned even before the first atomic weapon was even tested. They thought war was impossible going forward, and that other nations would inevitably acquire them, and this was unthinkable. I understand the logic, the intent was to bomb Berlin, but the war ended in Europe before it could be used. It definitely ended the war against Imperial Japan.
They should have nuked the Kremlin and saved the world a whole lot of trouble, one of the great blunders in history, by far.

Yes, it was. Adlai Stevenson had supposedly been whacked in the head by a sign carrying enthusiast “US out of the UN”, Adlai being the UN representative. He was reasonably conservative by the Cold War standards of the day, Democrats still being somewhat sane, at least in public.
But the “news” immediately speculated without evidence and blamed a “right wing climate of hate” on the shooting - imagine their distress when it turned out to be a communist defector to the Soviet Union. Not much has changed in 60+ years, just amplified 1000 times and 24/7 now, they don’t even try to hide it.

Right after the announcement that the president had died came over the intercom the school sent us all home immediately as soon as they could get the busses lined up. School didn’t start back up again until after Thanksgiving. Everyone just sat at home and watched the TV all day.
Cronkite was a pompous fraud. Americans loved him.
My mother parked outside the post office and let me listen on the radio while she went inside. She knew it was historical, but she was never a Kennedy voter. No tears in my family.

We got the intercom announcement while I was in high school study hall, but we weren’t sent home. JFK and his ilk weren’t popular in our little town.
