For many young Americans, the 2008 financial crisis was more than a downturn; it was a defining life event. Families lost homes to predatory mortgages, jobs vanished overnight, and college graduates faced bleak opportunities. For organizers like Gabe Tobias, watching low-income immigrant families lose everything to adjustable-rate mortgages was transformative. The crisis convinced many that capitalism itself was stacked against working people, a belief that would later fuel their political activism, the Wall Street Journal reported…
Polling shows that socialism resonates strongly with younger Americans. A YouGov survey this year found 62% of people aged 18 to 29 held a favourable view of socialism—an unimaginable figure during the Cold War. For many, the ideology is less about Marxist theory and more about housing, healthcare, and wages. As tenants’ rights organizer Genevieve Rand put it, “Why should I care about saving democracy if it can’t provide me a home or food I can afford?” This practical framing has broadened socialism’s appeal and pulled it into the political mainstream.
Mamdani, who won the Democratic primary for New York mayor in June, represents the culmination of nearly two decades of grassroots work. His charisma, use of social media, and ability to mobilize immigrant communities mattered—but so did the seasoned network of organizers forged through crises, campaigns, and movements since 2008. His victory signals that socialist politics is not only viable in America’s biggest city but potentially ascendant.
…Groups like the DSA Fund are now focused on governance, not just winning campaigns. The goal, they argue, is to turn electoral victories into durable policies on rent control, healthcare, and climate. For Tobias and others, Mamdani’s rise is “just step one” in a longer fight that began with the trauma of 2008 and continues to shape America’s political future…

but they (well, the men at least) shifted more towards Trump in the 2024 election...so maybe NYC is just an outlier?
It's because they were sold a bill of goods by Obama and Biden.
The danger here is that they are looking at socialism as a way out of their problems. If Trump and the republicans don't turn things around fast enough, he will lose them.
Many “young Americans” don’t know anything about the world except what they learned in public schools controlled by the Left. They’re also used to others giving them everything they need instead of relying on themselves. So they know that America is racist and capitalist while the rest of the world lives in socialist utopias.
They were indoctrinated in the schools to believe that socialism is the future.
Sad but true.
By their commie teachers.
Are they here illegally? Then I have a solution: Deport them!
Regards,
Trump and Mamdani both acknowledged yesterday that they share voters. (There are even street interviews of NY-ers who vote for AOC for Congress and Trump as President on the same ballot.)
The president also mentioned his awareness of Bernie Sanders voters who shifted to him in 2016 onwards.
It’s shared populism and acknowledgment of grievance.
Steve Bannon says if the Left runs with it nationwide, it’s alarm bells for GOP.
Millenials are the farthest left group, ever in US history.

Thank God our parents who survived the Great Depression only to defeat not only Nazis and but the Japanese at the same time, and then…. AND THEN rebuilt the country after 20 very difficult years to allow the Country to grow and prosper. Guess the new generation did not get taught history by the woke educational system, guest the new generation was not told life has it’s ups and downs and most importantly THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH!
Because we’ve failed them while stuffing their heads with 16 years of propaganda.
Socialism has always “resonated” with the ignorant.
It always seems to resonate with the stupid.
Because the baby boomers destroyed this country and the young people have nowhere else to go
Their attitude will change when they move out of mommy’s basement and get a job.
The first paycheck is always an eye opener. Who is this FICA guy? I thought I earned a thousand bucks. Where’s the other half?

I repeat. It is NOT Socialism. It is hard core Marxism. There is a big difference.
“opportunity to earn”
has been transmorgified into
“entitlement to receive”
thus, every employer in town complains about not being able to hire people who are willing (or want) to work for their pay
they’d rather sit “in their parents’ basements” watching the boobtoob or cute cat videos on UTube....or other videos we needn’t detail here....
scarfing up all the free food our welfare system gives them
They’ve never actually been exposed to it. People risked their lives and died trying to get away from it. Think folks hung up in the barbed wire trying to escape east berlin. But hey, it SOUNDS awesome. Fidiots!
Globalism , Free Trade, legal immigration, worker replacement have all but killed capitalism. This makes socialism inevitable.n
