Crony capitalism is a system where businesses gain advantages not through competition or quality but through their political connections. Companies with ties to government officials receive favors like special contracts, tax breaks, or relaxed regulations, giving them an unfair edge over others. This distorts the free market, reduces competition, and often leads to corruption, higher costs, and less innovation.

The U.S. beef-packing industry is highly concentrated, with the top four companies—Tyson Foods, JBS USA, Cargill Meat Solutions, and National Beef—controlling roughly 80–85% of the market. Tyson and JBS each hold around 20–25%, Cargill about 15–20%, and National Beef roughly 14–15%. This dominance means a small group of processors largely determines cattle prices, plant capacity, and supply-chain dynamics across the entire beef industry.
