President Donald Trump Friday evening said he was ending deportation protections for Somalis in Minnesota "effective immediately."
"Minnesota, under Governor [Tim] Walz, is a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity," Trump posted on Truth Social.
He continued, "I am, as President of the United States, hereby terminating, effective immediately, the Temporary Protected Status (TPS Program) for Somalis in Minnesota."
Trump claimed that "Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that great State, and BILLIONS of Dollars are missing. Send them back to where they came from. It’s OVER! President DJT."
Minnesota has a sizable Somali population and the TPS program allows Somali nationals temporary legal status to live and work in the U.S. because of the dangerous conditions in the African country.
In the last several years, the state has faced fraud problems, most notably from the Feeding Our Future scheme, which embezzled hundreds of millions of dollars in COVID-19 funds.
The president's decision comes as a new investigation from the Manhattan Institute, a conservative think tank, alleged that millions of dollars were being funneled to the Somali terror group Al-Shabaab in connection with the Feeding Our Future scam.

It sucks that we dare not go to the MOA or the theaters or concerts or a ball game anymore!
The worst part is Ilhan robbing us blind while occupying a seat in congress.
Thank you, Pres. Trump. Please deport Gov. Timpon too and that idiot mayor of Minneapolis, Frey.
Thank you Mr. President!
The illegal alien Somalies will now run from there, cast a wide net. Get. Them. All.
So, how long until some POS activist judge throws a monkey wrench into this.
Stupid people in Minnesota voting for democrats is the real problem......same with Maine.
Florida doesn’t have this problem......I’ll give you one guess why
George W weeps.
It looks like this will only affect 700 people.
The Dems would quietly thank him for the favor.
That’s a start...
How did you come up with that number?
Ship them back to Africa via Russian fuel tankers. Bon Voyage, don’t forget to pass out the life jackets.
🐂💩.
Put them on a flatbed garbage boat and push it east with a tug until it is about 50. miles off the US coast and then who cares.
don’t forget to pass out the life jackets.“
Or not.
Effectively immediately means until a Federal judge prevents it.
Brave AI for this status among Somalis in Minnesota.
705 was what it estimated.
As of March 31, 2025, there were 705 Somali nationals approved for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) nationwide in the United States. Minnesota is home to the largest Somali community in the country, and older data from March 2023 indicates approximately 430 TPS beneficiaries resided there. No publicly available federal or state data breaks down the exact number of Somali TPS holders specifically in Minnesota as of November 2025, but given the state's demographic concentration, the majority of the 705 national total are likely located there.I recall Biden granting a lot more TPS after March 2023.
The president’s decision to negate Somali’s Temporary Protective Status comes as the Manhattan Institute, a conservative think tank, alleged that millions of dollars were being funneled to the Somali terror group Al-Shabaab in connection with the Feeding Our Future scam.
The Minneapolis Somali community has been involved in several significant fraud schemes, most notably the multi-million dollar “Feeding Our Future” federal child nutrition program fraud, and other unrelated cases involving Medicaid fraud and immigration fraud.
Somali Feeding Our Future Fraud Scheme
This is the largest fraud scheme in Minnesota history, centered on the Somali nonprofit “Feeding Our Future” and related Somali entities. Participants exploited a federally funded program, intended to provide free meals to children during the COVID-19 pandemic, by Somalis submitting fraudulent claims for millions of meals that were never served.
Key aspects of the scheme:
More than $250 million was fraudulently obtained and laundered. Somali individuals and companies created shell companies and fake meal sites, submitted false meal count sheets and attendance rosters, and offered kickbacks to Somali families to use their children’s information for enrollment.
Somali money Laundering: Stolen funds were used to purchase luxury vehicles, commercial and residential real estate for Somalis in Minnesota and Somalis abroad (Kenya, Turkey, Ohio, Kentucky), and to fund Somali international travel.
Over 70 individuals have been charged, with many pleading guilty or being convicted at trial. The case also involved an alleged attempt to bribe a juror.
Other Noteworthy Somali Frauds
Medicaid/Autism Services Fraud: Several Somali individuals, including clinic owners and employees, have been charged in separate large-scale Medicaid fraud cases. Schemes involved Somalis billing for services not provided (such as “standing around and drinking tea”), using unqualified staff, and paying kickbacks to clients to maintain enrollment.
One case involved Somali claims related to an autism program where nearly $14 million in fraudulent Somali claims were submitted.
Housing Stabilization Services Fraud: Somali defendants have been charged with exploiting the state’s Housing Stabilization Services (HSS) program, a Medicaid benefit, by creating fraudulent Somali claims for services that were not rendered.
Immigration Fraud: Federal authorities have conducted operations targeting Somali immigration fraud, uncovering instances of Somali marriage fraud, the use of fake Somali death certificates, and forged documents within the Somali community.
Voter Fraud: A former Somali campaign volunteer for a state senator was convicted of lying to a federal grand jury regarding his involvement in illegally delivering Somali absentee ballots without the voters’ consent during a primary election.
Federal authorities emphasize their commitment to pursuing those who exploit government programs for personal profit.
