The House voted 285-98 on Friday to denounce the “horrors of socialism,” a sharp rebuke delivered just hours before President Donald Trump sits down with New York’s incoming democratic socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani.
Eighty-six Democrats crossed the aisle to back the resolution, while two voted present. Republicans were unified in support.
Speaker Mike Johnson and other GOP leaders have blasted Mamdani’s victory in the nation’s largest city, casting him as the latest radical avatar of the Democratic Party. They’ve already signaled they plan to use him as a political battering ram heading into the 2026 midterms.
Democrats brushed off the attacks and took aim at the Republican-written measure, complaining it “selectively lists certain despotic leaders and the harms of totalitarian regimes self-labeled as ‘socialist.’” Still, party leaders stopped short of urging a formal no vote. Many moderates, especially those from New York, have been visibly uneasy about Mamdani’s sudden rise.
Tensions spiked during the debate when Rep. Maria Salazar of Florida tore into Rep. Maxine Waters of California, accusing her of being a “friend” of Fidel Castro despite having visited Cuba and witnessed the regime’s abuses. Waters asked the House to strip the remarks, but Salazar withdrew them, and the chamber moved on.
Mamdani says he’s marching into the meeting with Trump with three key priorities for New Yorkers in mind: public safety, economic security, and “the affordability agenda that over 1 million New Yorkers voted for.”
The socialist mayor-elect has promised aggressive progressive action the moment he takes office. He says he will freeze rents on day one for the 2 million New Yorkers living in rent-stabilized apartments, make buses faster and free, and roll out free child care.
He has not elaborated at length on how he plans to pay for the costly initiatives.

He’s nuts, Jim.
Trump and the dude will wind up similar to Trump and "Z"....the man with no cards.
The fact that 86 Dems voted for the resolution is, to me, amazing.
Owwwwwwwww! Not that.
“”He says he will freeze rents on day one for the 2 million New Yorkers living in rent-stabilized apartments,””
And the owners of the apartment houses will say “thanks” and
put him on their Christmas card list, I suppose!

Two words, “Sistah Souljah”
Yawn
If only it were that easy. The guy is not nuts. He’s like all Commies… a highly skilled liar. He knows damn well he can’t do what he promised but he already has his next set of lies ready to go. They’ll be that the wealthy capitalists are blocking him from helping the people. The stupid people who were ignorant enough to vote for him will believe him again.
They can’t seem to define a woman so how do they define socialism? Medicare and Obamacare are socialistic.
Not enough for Mayor Jihadi.
Why does Congress waste time on pointless crap like this. Balance the budget, cut taxes, reform the FBI, hell, even actually make a budget instead of using continuing resolutions. Do real stuff, not feel-good resolutions that accomplish nothing.
I suppose it is one small act to pass a ‘resolution’ that condemns socialism, but that will not stop the totalitarian scourge. They need to BAN all totalitarian ideologies in this country (make the political promotion and practice criminal) - Marxism, Socialism, Fascism, Communism, Islamism, etc., which are incongruent with a Constitutional Republic.
Very intelligent...very articulate...utterly depraved.
THE HOUSE HAS 435 MEMBERS-—
WHERE ARE THE REST OF THE VOTES?????
Socialists fon’t like each other.
Gimme that clipboard!
No, it’s mine! Get on the train!
Democratic Party. They’ve already signaled they plan to use him as a political battering ram heading into the 2026 midterms.
Once the democrats have control it’s the day voting is over.
NYC did it’s part to help them.
