Road lanes across the country are to become narrower to stop cars overtaking cyclists as part of a new war on motorists, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.
Official guidance quietly published last week on the Government's website states that the standard width of a road lane in Britain – which for almost 150 years has been 12ft – is no longer appropriate because of the safety risk posed to cyclists.
Instead, lanes on local roads should either shrink no more than 10ft 8in wide or expand to at least 12ft 10in. Critics say space constraints in towns and cities mean they are far more likely to shrink.
Narrower roads, the guidance says, would make it clearer to motorists 'there is not enough space to safely overtake cyclists', while also showing cyclists 'that they need to ride more centrally'.
The guidance, which was drawn up by Active Travel England (ATE), a Government agency, will be applied to billions of pounds of future road building schemes, the MoS has learnt. Local authorities which defy the recommendations could see reduced transport funding.
The move has angered motoring campaigners, who predict that it will dramatically worsen traffic jams on already clogged roads and provoke more conflict between drivers and cyclists.
Brian Gregory, policy director at the Alliance of British Drivers, said: 'If you slow everybody down to the speed of cycles on narrow roads that is a huge economic cost to the country in wasted time.
'The whole idea is just to make driving unpleasant instead of trying to get everybody to co-operate and work together to use roads safely. It's all about penalising motorists. It's completely stupid.'

Watch out for The Grannies!!
This is called “Road diet”.
It is being, quietly, implemented everywhere, even in the US, in progressive cities, to fight the global warming.
The idea behind this is simple.
Since the cars are polluting, we need to restrict traffics so badly, that finally, people get fed up with driving and start walking, biking or using city busses!
Definitely targets indigenous British.
Been a while.
Reading popular Brit lit from 50s and 60s and the trajectory was already in place.
Yes the bicycle lanes on major roads all over. Here where the weather is inclement and often icy.
like shooting fish in a barrel.

This isn’t about the safety of cyclists.
It’s about discouraging people from owning larger cars, from driving.
Most UK roadways are old.
They were never designed for larger cars, let alone allowing cars and cyclists room on the roadway together.
Cyclists are just a weapon in their Deep State’s war on drivers.
OK, I get it. Instead of a road being just barely wide enough to pass a cyclist, they want them narrower so the bikers get run over.
And where is fuel efficiency when a car cannot pass a bike and has to be forced to go 20 mph or less?
In our neck of the woods special lanes are created in a few areas just for bikes to travel in. That would make more sense for both bikers and motorists.
Like the title says, it’s a war on motorists.
Complete idiots... But then again wait till Sharia law takes completely over.
Much truth to your statement.
One thing that needs to fit into the mix is how good times create liberal women that accelerate the coming of hard times.
I worked for UK based company.
The last two years there, I saw ever increasing amounts of idiocy, childish behavior, and ever increasing bureaucracy that seemed to target competent and capable people like me and a handful of others.
I don’t miss the place at all now. For many years, it was an ok job but starting going downhill not long after 2023.
We’ll see.
. It’s completely stupid.’
Stupids vote and put stupids in office. Where’s the problem?
Idiocy - we have wider roads with bike lanes to be sure bikes have room...they’re gonna get a lot of bikers killed because a car going 15 clicks behind a bike is gonna lay on the horn and the biker will flip him the bird and slow down...and things will “progress”
As a cyclist I want cars to pass me (safely of course) I hate when they hang back afraid to pass. That only makes it more dangerous if there are a bunch of impatient drivers behind him.
Absolute stupidity. This idea was conceived by someone who’s never ever ridden a bicycle
I saw the movie as well. Lawrence was riding too fast for conditions.
This should thin the herd quite nicely.
I don’t understand why snobbishly riding bicycles on roadways is such a popular way of staying in shape for pride parades?
They did something like this in a small part of downtown Boise a few years ago, but people complained loudly and it was shut down quickly.
