New York Bleeds Out
American Thinker ^ | 13 Nov, 2025 | William Levin

The nightmare descent of New York City under Mamdani rule has begun. Defunding the police, “free” services, and antisemitism are the tip of the spear. Staffing, policies, and mandates will issue from the mayor daily, implemented by an administration of hardcore socialists.

The outlook is far worse when measured in dollars and cents. Spending will soar from already unsustainable levels, even as the tax base exits. When the top 1% leave, along with major financial firms, they never return. The glory of New York will fade. The city will not even be able to sustainably pay its bills for basic services.

As they used to say in grade school, show your work.

It is typically claimed that New York contributes far more to the federal government than it receives in federal aid. The implication is that New York is impervious to federal cut-offs and holds the financial moral high ground.

Hogwash.

New York City pays nothing to the federal government. The so-called contribution, totaling an estimated $60 billion, excluding Social Security payments, is the individual income tax dollars paid directly by NYC residents to the U.S. Treasury. None of these payments has anything to do with the city budget. The federal government will receive these revenues regardless of where people reside.

What matters is the NYC budget and the source of revenues.

In 2025, NYC’s budget totaled $119.8 billion. The city starts the Mamdani-era madness with a forecasted annual deficit of $5 billion to $6 billion, with no answers how to fill this gap. Factor in the city’s dependence on $10.5 billion in direct payments from the federal government. President Trump says he will lower that number to the legal minimum. Mamdani insists that no cuts can be made, that these payments are inviolate.

Municipalities of course don’t pay federal taxes, but this guy sounds like he thinks everyone believes they do.

“The only explanation I can think of is that Deep State is going to have federal taxpayers cover the city’s losses.”

NYC and California will be bailed out under the next Democrat president. Likely that president will be elected in 2028.

Despite President Trump’s claims the current economy is the best in history, the signs of looming recession are significant. Layoffs are increasing in the private sector. Food prices (with the possible exception of eggs) are continuing to rise and are squeezing middle class households along with escalating property taxes. Medical care costs are also escalating well in excess of the government reported inflation rate. The housing market has slowed down significantly but prices have not dropped sufficiently to improve affordability for first time homebuyers. Crime and homelessness is still very visible. The public education system continues to fail. Consumer confidence index is declining.

The stock market is at all time highs and Trump constantly touts the market as one of his accomplishments. We are overdue for a correction and recent volatility suggests that correction is nearing. A stock market decline of 20-30% early in 2026 will be blamed on Trump.

Ultimately swing voters vote their pocketbooks and their personal well being. Voters squeezed by inflation and property taxes, concerned about job loss, enduring a 20-30% loss in the value of their retirement plans, unable to afford to send their children to private schools in order to escape failed public schools, and concerned about crime historically vote against he party in power. In addition, mid-term elections usually result in loss of seats for the party in power. Certainly voters who have become unemployed under the current administration are unlikely to vote for a continuation of the current policies.

If the US is in an economic recession on Election Day 2026, and the voters blame the economy on the current administration, Republicans could lose both houses of Congress. In that event, expect the Democrats to demand acceleration of government spending, including bailouts for Democrat run cities and states.

What a catastrophe. It’s the preverbal lemming death dash over the cliffs. It leads one to view humanity as also possessing a cyclical, perverted, suicidal act of death. We get to watch this one happen before our very eye - NYC’s plunge over the Communist’s cliff to financial ruin.

Interesting.

Mamdani rule doesn't begin until New Year's Eve, and most of the things he has campaigned on, he has no power to do.

Just look back on the commie rule of Warren Wilhelm, Jr for reference.

I’ve been using iterations of the Opera browser for over 20 years, there are other good ones too. There are no ads on AT, period, if one has a decent ad blocker built-in.

Bump.

Mandami is the symptom. The cancer has been taking the body over for years.

Through its history, NYC has had dark ages. Here comes another.

I don’t doubt the psychotic ideology of these clowns but he’s limited. The issue is he is just a Mayor who will fail and be cast into the dustbin of ineffectual flash in the pan political personalities. The deluded folks who put him there will realize the error of their ways but will never admit to their gullibility and ignorance…. They will just quitely move on to the next leftist iconclast.

Wait’ll he starts filling the empty slots at NYPD with his hand picked Brownshirts. What’s the workaround for that?

Same here. Also DailyMail, NY Post, Breitbart etc. don’t bother anymore.

For a clear view of the future of New York and anywhere under socialist/Marxist/communist rule, watch the 2015 Russian TV series The Red Queen (Krasnaya koroleva), available on Amazon Prime.

If anybody knows, the Russians do.

Not for the fainthearted:

I still recall visiting NYC with an older neighbor/friend who was going to attend college there in 1977.
We were walking through Times Square in the middle of the day. I was 15 or 16. A very large Black woman axed us : “You boys want a date?” We were boys from the country. We just shook our head and said no. thank you.

I also remember going there the spring(2002) after 9/11 on a company trip. We stayed in a nice hotel right on the west side of Times Square next to Madame Tousos Wax Museum. It was clean. Cops were everywhere.
You could walk around at 1am and feel safe. My boss felt it was our patriotic duty to go spend money in NYC. It was REALLY quiet on the weekends after 9/11.

For a company picture we all assembled in front of PEEPORAMA. “Having a great time in NYC”
This was the last peep show place left in the Times Square area. All the others had been closed down.
