Certain bitter plant compounds — the kind found naturally in cocoa, apples, berries and red wine — may temporarily boost memory by activating the brain's internal "alarm system," a new study suggests.

Researchers at the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Japan found that when mice consumed flavanols — plant-based compounds known for their antioxidant properties — their brains released a surge of noradrenaline, a chemical linked to alertness and focus.

Within an hour, the animals performed about 30% better on a memory test compared with untreated mice, according to the findings, which were published in October in the journal Current Research in Food Science.

With all of the dark chocolate, red wine, and berries I've eaten, I should be a damn genius!

Been there, tried it. I wound up drunk, fat with seeds in my teeth. Now I know what to do for my next certification exam.

I make a desert: 3 over ripe bananas, tablespoon of dark chocolate powder (80% cocoa), tablespoon of honey. Immersion blend until creamy, spoon into bowl lined with Saran wrap. Freezer. 2 servings Eat like a chocolate bar.

Best frozen desert ever.

I’d prefer a dessert to a desert.

In additiom to flavonoids, one ounce pf Bakers cocoa contains (as I recall from my research of literature about 35 years ago) 1000 mg of phenylethanolamine, a substance that is a natural antidepressant.

'Some day when you feel quite sad, eat some dark chocolate, maybe a whole bar. Don't think about it, but set an alarm to check how you feel a couple of hours later, and expect to have a somewhat better outlook on life.

Dark chocolate is a gift from God. Red wine and berries are like icing on the cake. And they’re good for you! Truly a “win win”.

Thank the public school system for my misspelling. Also, my lack of grammar, syntax, punctuation and everything else they failed to teach.
