Thank you very much and God bless you.

Once the world's semiconductor powerhouse, Japan lost its lead in the 1990s -- but now it's quietly staging a comeback. Instead of racing TSMC or Samsung in chip fabs, Japan is buying back control of the upstream -- the materials, wafers, tools, and packaging every chipmaker depends on.

I was just eating some chip and cheese and started thinking about this.

There are 4 competing designs on 18A.
TSMC
Japan
Samsung
Intel

Only 1 or two are going to make it work

Been investing in them for a couple of years now.

TSMC is IMO a well-run company. I have done work in several of their fabs in Taiwan, although that was more than a decade ago and things do change over time.

They have a serious risk: most of their production is <100 miles from the saber-rattling People’s Republic of China.

So there are two kinds of production diversification going on. TSMC is establishing production facilities elsewhere in the world (including here in the US); that takes time. And some companies with products that depend upon TSMC-manufactured ICs are seeking to diversify their supply sources away from TSMC.

We live in complex, interesting times...

If I had to bet, TSMC and Samsung will get there.

The last time I was up to speed on these things was the introduction of MOSFETs.
Whatever they are, it was so long ago, like the 1980s.

Thanks! I’ve watched a couple of those, but not in months, and probably never got around to posting any of ‘em.
