They're from the government, and they're here to help:
'Friendly' San Diego city officials are set to send teams of inspectors to dig through people's trash cans looking for recycling violations.
Nicely, of course.
They plan to issue 'oops' citations to scofflaws who throw the wrong stuff in the wrong trash bins.
In San Diego, we put trash in one of three bins -- generic trash (black can), recycle trash (blue can), and organic trash such as food scraps and lawn clippings (green bin.) (snip)
Oh, it's not because they want to go through our trash, they say.
Ostensibly, it's a safety concern -- some people are throwing batteries into the bins and some of the trucks are blowing up, which does sound like a serious problem, if true.
Do they do inspections after they find a battery or before? How could they stop a trash-truck fire unless it's pre-emptive, making every resident a suspect?
The video didn't say.
But is digging through every trash can the answer? What if they find other stuff they disapprove of? What if they would like to tell a neighbor of his affair with the other neighbor's wife, too? What if city officials would really like to go through a political opponent's trash under the pretext of searching for battery scofflaws?
We should just trust them, you see.
And in a blue city that's already bankrupt, are they really going to be able to do that effectively in a city of 1.4 million? How can they be sure they'll get the right violator?
Aren't there better ways to trace violations than mass inspections of cans? Cameras?
How will they prove who did what?

“Aren’t there better ways to trace violations than mass inspections of cans?“
That is the wrong question. What is wrong with these people that they elect a government so oppressive that they would enact laws governing which container you sort your garbage into.
The People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs?
...of course if you live in an apartment, life gets ‘sportier’ for this brand of Karens.
How many will be on their death beds wishing they spent more of their time on this rock sorting their garbage so a bureaucrat can feel good about themselves?
“When I grew up in the 50’s, in the far future (the 2000’s) we were going to have flying cars, a base on the moon and robots doing menial labor.
Instead we have to sort our garbage.
I’m disappointed.”
Right? Same.
I recently watched a video about recycling rules in Japan (forgot which city), where violations could cost fines and also “losing face”. They had at least 7 categories and everything had to be meticulously washed (using LOTS of soap/water — wasteful?), flattened (when possible) and placed properly in the bins.
We had a similar situation when we lived in Germany. One large bin outside for everyday trash but under the stairs we had 4 bins for paper & cardboard, clear glass, colored glass and cans. Once they were full it was our responsibility to take those bins to the trash facility and sort them into the corresponding dumpsters. If you were “caught” putting something in the big bin that shouldn’t be there... the trash collectors would leave it full and put a notice on top to “fix” your error... not pleasant!
You’re evil, but I like the idea. lol
One of the “wrongs” by the trash/recycle regs in California has to do with government mandating everyone support government run composting. That means your “wet” garbage, like kitchen food waste is required to not be in the “regular” garbage but put out separately. But all that biological waste is healthy for the landfill and contributes to the microbial colonies that breakdown all trash, eventually. What the regs then requirement is that from the food waste the processors are to recover 20% of it as edible food that can help feed the needy.
The regs turn dumpster diving into an industry that contractors hired by the cities can profit from. That creates another industry making another political fundraising pipeline to the big government Dims that mandated the creation of it. THAT is really what the law is about - Fascist progressives and the industries beholden to them for the laws that create and prop them up with government mandates.
Yes. It is expensive to actually recycle stuff that does not go for high prices, such as computer parts. There also are simply no buyers for most recycling. The market is glutted. Even paper, much of it can not be recycled, the fibers are too short.
If they would burn trash for generating electricity, then separating trash at the curb would make more sense.
I would like to see them enforce their rules in some of the bad neighborhoods in town.
The notion that each person has total control of their garbage on the street is laughable on its face.
I grew up in the Bay Area, went to college at UC San Diego, got married and spent my twenties in LA. California used to be heaven on Earth. And then the liberals showed up.
OMFG
I couldn’t live in a place like that
In Hong Kong they root through sewage tanks to see who has Covid and Monkey Pox.
Here’s how Germany does recycling:
Germany is a global leader in recycling due to its highly organized waste separation system, which uses multiple color-coded bins for categories like paper, glass, and plastics. A key feature is the “Pfand” deposit-return scheme for beverage containers, which rewards consumers with a refund and has a high return rate. Germany also has high legal recycling targets for various materials, such as 90% for paper and glass and 63% for plastic.
Waste separation and collection
Multiple bins: Households typically sort waste into several bins:
Paper: Paper and cardboard go in the blue bin or bag.
Plastic and metal: This goes into the “Gelber Sack” (yellow bag) or the yellow bin, which collects packaging like plastic bottles, cartons, and aluminum cans.
Organic waste: Food scraps, peelings, and garden waste go into the brown bin.
Glass: Glass bottles are sorted by color (clear, brown, green) and placed in designated containers in public areas, not in home bins.
Residual waste: Other non-recyclable items, such as ash and diapers, are placed in the black bin for general waste.
Fines of up to 1000 Euros. And, yes, they do inspect.
Thank goodness that human poop is recycleable!
I’d bet the German recycling does not pay for itself.
Paying for itself is a clear indicator the recyling does not make sense.
But they don’t recycle the stuff. What’s the point?
I was thrilled to sell my house in Mira Mesa (north San Diego) after 18 years. The gang activity moved north. graffiti and drug deals all over the area, street racing over my back fence, property tax assessments to subsidize a poor professional football team, freeways so jammed that I often worked until 9 PM just to avoid sitting in traffic, endless waits for a seat at a restaurant everywhere. I could go on, but that is a shortlist. Trampling on 2nd amendment rights and high income taxes at the state level AND a corrupt political system biased in favor of the left.
Trash collection is (was) included in property taxes, so you don't get a separate bill. Sorting trash in a pain in the butt. It isn't just city that wants to go through your trash. The urban outdoorsmen that enjoy the pleasant weather and support from the city council want a go at your trash too.
I moved to Idaho in Dec 2000. No regrets getting away from San Diego.
Too late. They are already revolting.
Leave them some nasty surprises. Make ‘em wretch while doing the job.
