With Bill Gates retreating from his high-profile climate crusade, the stage has opened for more unconventional actors to step into the planetary arena. Enter Elon Musk, the chief executive of SpaceX and self-styled architect of humanity’s future in space.
This week, Musk floated an audacious vision: a vast swarm of orbiting satellites, not merely to beam internet or data, but to harvest solar energy and regulate how much sunlight reaches Earth. On Monday, he wrote on his platform X:
A large solar-powered AI satellite constellation would be able to prevent global warming by making tiny adjustments in how much solar energy reached Earth.
It is not an isolated musing. Musk already commands more than 8,000 satellites in orbit, making SpaceX the single largest operator in low Earth orbit. His company is also deeply integrated with the U.S. defense and intelligence establishment, providing secure communications and reconnaissance support. And as one of Donald Trump’s biggest donors and technology contractors, Musk stands at the intersection of private ambition and state power.
The announcement reignited debate over geoengineering — also known as solar radiation modification (SRM) — a highly controversial concept to cool the planet by deflecting sunlight. Many observers, weary of climate-doomsday narratives and wary of billionaire “saviors,” have urged Musk to refrain from “playing God.”
Musk’s posts were brief, but behind them lie two vast engineering ambitions — one focused on solar power, the other on climate control. To most readers, it may sound like science fiction, yet the ideas are grounded in real, if speculative, physics.
The first part of Musk’s plan involves satellites that would collect solar energy directly in space. He mentioned harnessing 100 gigawatts per year through an array...

A whole lot of things, starting with unpredictable alterations to global weather patterns.
Do you have any other ideas as to what might go wrong?
Elon is just trying to get back into the Left’s good graces so he can hopefully stay out of prison after the Democrats retake congress next year.
Can’t really blame him.
So the sun controls global warming? Who knew?
Elon Musk states an obvious possibility, which negates all the stupid “climate change” scare scam.
He is only saying what any thinking person knows is possible.
His hubris, may be thinking a future AI will be able to determine what “micro-adjustments” need to be made, some time in an indeterminate future.
Who does he think he is, Mr. Burns?
Now Musk just gets crazier.
What could possibly go wrong?
No!
No!
No!
Bad Musk, bad!!!
LOL, he's not. He is taken in by world government subsidies. If they want to pay him to put useless junk in space...
The 'Dude' will oblige.
The thousands of square miles of solar panels blocking the sun will power StarLink far into the future.
That messes with their whole carbon dioxide narrative...
FOR LOVE OF MONEY, a woman will sell her precious body, for a small piece of paper it carries a lot of weight. For the big big D... Almighty Dolla.
Crop failures to follow, then blight and starvation.
Please, God, stop these people that think they know better than You.
Musk is supposedly a brilliant man & I thought he might be smart enough not to try to mess with Mother Nature. Maybe I guessed wrong about him. Natural situations such as climate that constantly occur (and change) are really not operating according to man’s desire. That was all set in place by God.
He’s had a lot of great ideas, this is not one of them.
It’s a cover for military research: space sharks with frikkin lasers on their heads powered by the sun and orbiting the Earth, ready to blast anything Elon doesn’t like..
“How can such an intelligent man taken in by the Global Warming con?”
Money... Musk is all about the money. He has sold his soul for money... He does nothing unless it will make him money in the end.
Please leave the GD sun alone. Everything alive depends on it.
There was one significant false assumption stated earlier, climate change proponents do NOT think the current climate is optimal, I believe they think the climate of around 1951 to 1980 is optimal. We have warmed about 1.0 C in most regions since then (and 2.0 C since the mid-19th century).
Climate change proponents would like to cool the earth by around 1.0 C degrees (1.8 F degrees). I am not advocating for this myself, just stating what I know to be the case.
I think the danger lies in unpredictability rather than just being afraid of a cooler climate result. If in fact you could rely on any prediction of outcome being restricted to that result, it would not be all that dangerous, if probably not perceptible to most people. But what I would find dangerous, and I would want to argue this to anyone capable of stopping such initiatives, is that the atmosphere is more complex than just the concept of regulating room temperature, as some of these proponents might imagine. Changing the thermal balance has ripple effects on precipitation, storm tracks, even storm intensity. One of the bigger fallacies of climate change is that storms are becoming more intense. Actually in colder climates many types of storms were more intense than nowadays. So we could be engineering a more violent climate, and given that we have warmed up oceans that are not just going to cool down at the same rate as a cooling atmosphere, that could have a drastic outcome, it’s even possible that we would see superstorms more violent than the storms of colder climates (that had colder oceans).
I believe this entire sort of speculation is dangerous on two levels, the outcome portion, and the concept that it would be okay for billionaires to do whatever they could afford to do without any legal consequences or oversight of potentially affected nations.
If I thought the current data showed alarming warming trends I might think differently about this, but what I do see is a rather gentle warming that consists mainly of forcing the range of variability into a smaller range with the same maxima as before, just higher minima. I think this is an inevitable consequence of warmer oceans interacting with a relatively constant source of external heat. Anyway, there is no going back to the climate of 1951 to 1980, which was largely before widespread jet aircraft flight. The spread of contrails in our upper atmosphere has also changed the climate by reducing hours of bright sunshine by 5-10% (there are specific weather situations where contrails spread out to form man-made cloud systems). This is probably neither a good nor a bad thing on balance, it’s just a change. If it were a larger reduction it would be a problem perhaps.
The best response to climate challenges, whether one accepts them as real or not, is to work at adaptation, not trying to monkey around with the complicated machinery of the atmosphere (which Musk despite his obvious genius probably fails to understand is part of an atmosphere-ocean system with very complex feedback processes). As I understand Musk is the sort of person not to accept feedback of any kind, that may not be all that surprising.
Musk is going crazy like Bill Gates.
