WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. grocers and food companies ranging from Walmart (WMT) to Smithfield Foods (SFD) are bracing for a dip in November sales if federal food aid benefits lapse for the first time due to the ongoing government shutdown.

The shutdown has imperiled next month's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps, which serves nearly 42 million people.

Look for surplus of junk food now!

Not a bad thing.

I think RFK need to work on this. If you're using SNAP benefits, no junk food for you.

Gee that’s too bad. Massive corporations won’t be getting government handouts.

Walmart makes over 25% of its money off SNAP.

Well I suspect it won’t be doomsday as these two Yahoo losers are reporting. Tons of fraud in the program, people that aren’t going to go hungry that were gaming / robbing the system that they had no business being on. They won’t be on an rice and beans diet.

Food stamps should require a weigh-in: "Sorry La'quicha, you are two stone over the cutoff."

“Junk food futures crash!”

As Chaucer once said, many a true word hath been spoke in jest.

Today’s stock market:

Pepsico, -1.70%
Coca-Cola, -1.35%
Mondelez (Oreos etc), -1.41%

I heard on a radio talk show that SNAP users sometimes order by Grubhub and other delivery services, adding the delivery charge to their food orders on the SNAP accounts.

But on the TV news they made it look like the frightened mothers were chopping their last healthful vegetables on a cutting board and preparing oatmeal and fresh fruits they brought home in their bus trips to feed their families.

This, of course, does not mean many dollars of value are not sold at about 80% or more to buyers for cash.

The meat prices are why Clark Griswold was told Cousin Eddie ate squirrels until he found out they are high in cholesterol.

If this goes on for a few months it will crash the medical-industrial complex as well as US agribusinesses.

The question shouldn’t be:

“How are we going to feed 43 million people on SNAP?”

The question should be:

“Why do we have 43 million people on SNAP to begin with!”

Pathetic.

Food sales dip?

Compare the dip at Fresh Market with the dip at Quickie Mart.
Compare the dip in fresh food vs dry packaged food (cereal) vs snack food (chips, candy).

With the holidays coming up, they’re not going to be hurting that much.

I always stock up on sale items at this time of year. There are some things that seem to really only go on sale at this time of year.
