A Mississippi mom shot dead one of the aggressive monkeys that escaped from an overturned truck last week to protect her young children.
Jessica Bond Ferguson said she and other Heidelberg residents had been on high alert after word spread that monkeys — believed to be carrying dangerous diseases but later confirmed by officials not to be — had been roaming loose since Tuesday.
Early Sunday morning, her 16-year-old son ran into the house, claiming he had seen one of the animals in the yard.
“I shot at it and it just stood there, and I shot again, and he backed up and that’s when he fell.”
With police and animal control still, the mother of five said she decided to shoot the monkey, fearing it would get away and possibly would become a threat to children at another house in the neighborhood.

Not a lot of dangerous snakes up here in NH.
Although we do have timber rattlers. But they are very rare.
I loved Band of Brothers. I think I have watched the entire series at least three times. Shifty Powers reminded me a lot of Seargent York. Plus my day served in the Air Corp in WW2. My dad was a farm boy from WNY.
I grew up in WNY. I actually hunted and shot grey squirrels with a 22LR Winchester and once with a recourve bow and arrow. I used to skin them and eat them. The meat is similar to dark meat chicken. Not a lot of meat on a squirrel. They also look just like a rat when the fur and tail is removed.
I still hunt for deer right in the back of my property in NH. Whitetails are plentiful around here. I was out with my muzzell loader this past Saturday and Sunday morning. I saw all the neighborhood does. The only bucks I saw were on the game camera at 6:45pm, 8:35pm, 11:30pm and 3:30am.
I guess the rut has not started yet. There are three different bucks in the area. One is much more mature than the other two. He is a 9 or 10 pointer.
Did she shoot it sometime in the morning?

Aggressive monkeys are the worst kind of monkey. Probably carrying a switchblade.

Dead just isnt what it used to be when I was a kid.
In Texas yes. We saw a rattlesnake in the neighborhood shopping parking lot. It was 4-5 feet I guess very healthy. Moving. We were in the car but I pulled over so did everyone

And why do people use the word ‘ape’ to mean ‘mimic’?
Oh sure, they may look like monkeys, but apes have no tales, so don’t be fooled by their ready excuses!
Monkeys can be very dangerous, so I don’t blame her at all if she has young children to protect.

If you’re shooting at a dead monkey that just escaped, you probably need to blow it’s head off to stop it.

Most of us that comment about these bad headlines are fully aware of what was intended but that doesnt make the alternative interpretation any less funny.

So when the monkey escaped from the overturned vehicle, was it trying to protect its own baby monkeys or the Mississippi mom’s babies?
Stop it. Good grief.
How does a dead monkey escape from an overturned truck? Or, even from an upright truck?
“See how you just equated shooting a monkey with shooting humans as moraly equivalent? Its not.”
I didn’t write or even imply moral equivalency of the lives of humans and monkeys. But short of equivalency there remains plenty of room to respect animals lives and avoid harming them out of ignorance, whim, and malevolence. Some people actually view God’s creation as worthy of respect rather than callous exploitation.
Because they are genetically close to humans, Rhesus monkeys are particularly valuable for testing vaccines and treatments that save millions of human lives. Killing them, rather than capturing them, is particularly idiotic, though the idiocy in this case began with the misreporting of the original story, wherein the monkeys were said to be twice their real size, infected with multiple dangerous diseases, and aggressive to humans. I don’t know if these were aggressive, but the size and infection part was false.
