Studying the wrong Caesar gets high school seniors out of a history exam

Teachers at nine high schools in northeastern Australia discovered days before an ancient history exam that they had mistakenly taught their students about the wrong Roman ruler — Augustus Caesar instead of his predecessor, Julius Caesar.

The students in Queensland ended up being exempt from the statewide exam on Wednesday while Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said he would investigate the mix-up, describing the experience for the students as "extremely traumatic."

Since the error in the curriculum was discovered on Monday, schools applied — and were granted — an exemption from the exam for their students, even as panicked high schoolers were cramming about Julius Caesar's exploits as a Roman general and statesman.

"I'm very unhappy about the situation," Langbroek told reporters in announcing that the 140 seniors affected by the mix-up would not have to sit the exam.

Langbroek said he would ensure those students were "not disadvantaged in any way."

Still, the incident brought a wave of criticism.

Parents complained that the panic created around the ancient history exam had distracted their children from preparing for other exams, including an earlier exam on Wednesday.

The exam amounts to 25% of the students' marks for the year. The students who were exempted from the test on Wednesday would be given credit based on their assessment for the remaining 75% of their marks.

The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority said it had told the state's 180 high schools two years ago that the ancient history exam topic would change to Julius Caesar in 2025. The topic had been Augustus Caesar for the previous four years.

I thought the article would be that they watched the Planet of the Apes movies and learned about the ape Caesar.

He was almost certainly smarter than their teachers.

It does get a bit confusing.

It's a real puzzle I tell ya!

From the Signs in Unexpected Places thread back on 10/27...

As a quick aside re the Caesar ciphers...

A mostly complete puzzle

Truthfully, Augustus had a lot more influence on Rome.

Who Killed Julius?

The Brisbane high school principal walks into a senior history class, unexpected, to see how the students are doing.
He asks the teacher to stop the lesson so he can ask a few questions.
“Tell me, kids... Do you know who killed Julius Caesar?”
The classroom stays silent...
“Well, how about you, Mick?”, he points to a student in the back, “Do you know who killed Julius Caesar?”
“It warn’t me!”
The Principal is surprised at this answer. He points at a girl in the front, “Julia. Do you know who killed Julius Caesar?”.
“I didn’t do it, I swear!”
The Principal is completely flummoxed, he scans the classroom for someone who might know know the answer and his stare is met by another student who immediately begins sobbing,
“No! No! Not I! You can’t hang this on me!”

With a look of utter bewilderment the Principal turns to look at the teacher, and the teacher exclaims,
“Mate ... Sir! I certainly hope you don’t suspect I killed ‘im.”

I thought Caesar and the Pirates was funny.

Me too. "Hey dudes, Imma come back and crucify you all."

"Sure thing, kid. Sure you will."

And he did.

There is a lot to know about Julius Caesar. Maybe they should pick an easier Caesar, like Tervel, the Bulgar khan named a Caesar by the emperor Justinian II.

Or, perhaps Mohammed VI, who was deposed when the Republic of Turkey was established in 1922. He held the title "Caeser of Rome," as did all of the Ottoman sultans who had preceded him since the fall of Constantinople in 1453.

Just might have been an edumacator born in India China Timbuktoo.....What do they care about the white man’s history? They don’t want to hear about it.

Oz idiots allow in floods of legal Asians. Also as university students, who want to remain in Australia aka kangaroo land. Oz has more Asian students per capita than we do. Though Oz still has more dingos and kangaroos, than Asians.

Why not teach them about both?

July is named for Julius.

August is named for Augustus.

They are both important to know when studying about ancient Rome.

But he was nice about it.

He slit their throats before he crucified them.

And so are there superiors.

Were they not required to submit lesson plans to someone like a Dean of Studies?
