I stopped watching June 24, 1997 when they had their first gay kiss on tv. I had to look that up, but yeah, that’s when I stopped watching listening.

For 44 years, MTV has been a cultural juggernaut That's being charitable. MTV was a cultural juggernaut for about 15 years then it gradually declined to irrelevance. Still, my friends and I watched it in the early 1980s as kids.

They still had a music channel?
Since like the late 1990s it has been smut and various left-wing political propaganda shows.

Their first video was “Video Killed the Radio Star”.

Once a music video powerhouse, it now leans heavily into reality programmingI guess they'll have to change their name to BSTV (if that isn't already taken).

Modern music is pretty much dead so it has to be hard to come up with new content. Also MTV didn’t start the video revolution. We owe that to as show on regular TV called “Friday Night Video’s”.

Video may have killed the radio star but MTV committed suicide.

MTV stopped focusing on music videos over 30 years ago. About when I stopped watching in the 1990s, it was reality TV shows and other stuff that you could get on any other channel.

It shut down its music channels decades ago. Nothing but crap reality shows ever since.

One of the first MTV VJs is Colin Quinn, and he is a conservative and a friend of Nick D’Paolo. Both of them have regular podcasts. Nick’s conservative podcast is very good and funny, but I haven’t bothered digging into what Colin does because I already have too many podcasts to get through. I think there’s another ex-MTVer who also does a conservative show too - or I may be conflating some memories - anyway, that’s my pop culture and history lesson to today.
