Don’t forget, it used to be common for a judge to give a about-to-be sentenced thug a choice: prison or service.

I’m seeing a long stretch in the Naval brig here.
One of the best men in our community did exactly that. He took service and he became a pillar.
Does the Navy have the responsibility to incarcerate Marines?
My husband’s recently deceased best friend was the same. God spared his life at least twice in Vietnam, shortly after being discharged, he gave his life to the LORD and spent the rest of it evangelizing.
