Our society has only recently come to terms with the fact that maybe placating young children by getting them hooked on touchscreen devices with unfettered access to the internet was bad for their brains.
Now, with the rise of human-like AI chatbots, a generation of “iPad babies” could seem almost quaint: some parents are now encouraging their kids to talk with AI models, sometimes for hours on end, The Guardian reports. Others are using the soothing voice of a chatbot to put their kids to bed — all evidence of how this experimental technology has become a part of many people’s daily lives, despite major questions about how the tech affects our mental health.
...
While these uses may save parents time and fascinate their children, they’re playing with fire — and their conflicted feelings reflect that. AI chatbots have been implicated in the suicides of several teenagers, while a wave of reports detail how even grown adults have become so entranced by their interactions with sycophantic AI interlocutors that they develop severe delusions and suffer breaks with reality — sometimes with deadly consequences.
.
...professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education professor Ying Xu told The Guardian ... “A very important indicator of a child anthropomorphizing AI is that they believe AI is having agency,”..“That creates a risk that they actually believe they are building some sort of authentic relationship,” Xu added.

Former OpenAI Insider Says It’s Failed Its Users "People deserve more than just a company’s word that it has addressed safety issues."

Earlier this year, when OpenAI released GPT-5, it made a strident announcement: that it was shutting down all previous models.
There was immense backlash, because users had become emotionally attached to the more “sycophantic” and warm tone of GPT-5’s predecessor, GPT-4o. In fact, OpenAI was forced to reverse the decision, bringing back 4o and making GPT-5 more sycophantic.
The incident was symptomatic of a much broader trend. We’ve already seen users getting sucked into severe mental health crises by ChatGPT and other AI, a troubling phenomenon experts have since dubbed “AI psychosis.” In a worst-case scenario, these spirals have already resulted in several suicides, with one pair of parents even suing OpenAI for playing a part in their child’s death.

Technology is ruining young kids. Parents don’t read to/with them anymore. More and more lately start school without knowing how to read.
“Mommy’s left the room! It’s time for Drag Queen Story Hour!”
If they play it backwards, it says “Get a job!”
Adolf Hitler implemented extensive programs to indoctrinate German youth starting in the 1930s, not just the 1940s [1, 2]. This was a core component of the Nazi regime’s efforts to shape the future of Germany according to their ideology.
Well, it’s definitely less work than actually talking to or interacting with the kids.
“Kids are different today,” I hear every mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down
And though she’s not really ill, there’s a little yellow pill
She goes running for the shelter of her mother’s little helper
And it helps her on her way, gets her through her busy day
Parenting cannot be automated.
When I lived in Hawaii I was friends with one of my clients and his whole family. He lived on the beach just outside Kaneohi. I would go visit frequently for dinner. I have a picture where all the kids and grandkids were in the large living room, the TV was blasting full valume, every single grandkid was on a tablet, the parents were all on tablets, and no one talked to anyone. The friends and elderly fols were all out in the back BBq going cooking up the day’s catch and ‘talk story.’ All the kids were on their tablets and phones. No one to blame but those parents that were buying those devices for the kids.
You are right! This will become the monster that eats society.
“…AI interlocutors that they develop severe delusions and suffer breaks with reality …”
I find it hard to believe that these people aren’t wrapped too tight to begin with.
The missing factor in this is how many of these AI-bonded children have any close kin. Which is related to basically mandated contraception, which has many insidious effects.
More and more ppl start college without knowing how to read above a 8th grade levels Only about 32% of college freshmen read at or above the 12th grade level, and the rest fall somewhere between 5th and 12th grade, with the mean clustering around 7th-8th. - https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED596352.pdf Over half read below a 6th grade level, and about a third of high school seniors lack basic reading skills needed for college work. - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/whats-caused-reading-scores-to-drop-to-worst-point-in-decades-education-expert-weighs-in
