If Jesus Was a Jew, Why Are We Catholic?

The term Jew is used in at least two senses in Scripture: to refer to those who are ethnically Jews and to those who are religiously Jews. Jesus was a Jew in both senses. In fact, he completed the Jewish religion by serving as the Messiah (Christ) whom the prophets had long foretold.

The completed form of the Jewish religion is known as Christianity, and its adherents are Christians or “followers of the Christ.” Unfortunately, many people who were ethnically Jewish did not recognize Jesus’ role as Messiah and so did not accept Christianity, the completed form of Judaism. Instead, they stayed with a partial, incomplete form of Judaism. Other Jews (the apostles and their followers) did recognize that Jesus was the Messiah and embraced the new, completed form of Judaism

What did Jesus say when he stubbed his toe?

Our Lord fulfilled the Law, as St Paul writes: Col 2:16 ‘So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths,’

If the Law is still valid, why do we break it every Sunday?

BTW, Christians don't.

Do they keep the Sabbath (Saturday) holy as they were told to REMEMBER?

This verse has been explained numerous times. You just can’t accept it.

A Pope is nothing like a local preacher who is simply head of a small congregation and might even have to have a job outside of being a preacher.

The Catholic church headquartered in Vatican city is a whole different world.

“”””Every Christian belongs to some denomination or other, even if they call themselves “non-denominational.””””””

I think your calling not having an organization the same as being an organization, is similar to your thinking a preacher of a 20 member group of Christians the same as the Pope.

Do they keep the Sabbath (Saturday) holy as they were told to REMEMBER?

1. Jesus broke the Sabbath law (e.g., healing on the Sabbath).

2. There's nothing special about Saturday. If Christians chose to instead keep the Lord's Day (Sunday) holy, we're good. The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. (Mark 2:27)

I guess I should have put a /sarc tag in my post #32 to clarify that it was written with tongue-in-cheek. Think about it:

Because He fed the thousands with fish like it was Fish Friday. --- Even a LSU fan can see that was humor, not meant as a deep theological analysis. /sarc

Because Paul wrote to the Galatians, who were Celts, the ancestors to the Irish. That means today Jesus would be a Notre Dame fan. --- Even my red-headed stepchild can see that was a joke. /sarc

It was pretty obvious it was humor/sarcasm.

That was funny. I told a similar joke at an informal church gathering after two prior life changes resulted in me changing church (denomination) twice. So doing a standup routine I said that I had researched denominational differences according to the great theologian Jeff Foxworthy to tell when I’d had really become a Baptist, than later really became a Pentecostal (Assembly of God) then later became a Methodist (before it was overtly hedonist).

If you’re in the grocery store and when you see someone from church your reflexive move is to rearrange your shopping cart to hide your alcohol… you might be a Baptist. If you’ve never clapped in church, you might be a Baptist. If you’ve often clapped and danced in church before the music started … you might be Pentecostal. If you can count on one hand the number of times you clapped at any church function and you clapped on the down beat, not the up beat, you might be a Methodist. If you just now asked your wife “What’s the down beat?” and your wife elbowed you saying “Quit embarrassing me (insert name of elder pastor who like to cut up a lot)”… you might be a Methodist.

Jesus is God who was incarnated as a Jewish man.

Jesus fulfilled Judaism and a sect of 2nd temple Judaism was formed in 33 AD at Pentecost. This was the Jesus movement Jews, or, as theh called themselves “followers of the way of Jesus”.

They got the exonym (name given by outsiders) of Christian. The other 2nd temple Jewish sects like the Pharisees and Sadducees persecuted the Jesus movement Jews until 70 AD when, with the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem, those ptyer sects died out. The Pharisee rabbi Yohanan bin Zakkai created Rabbinical Judaism after 70 AD and, after the kitis war of 116 AD (when the Rabbinical Jews committed genocide against the gentile pagans in Cyrene (Libya) and Cyprus, the Cheistians decided to completely disassociate themselves from the Rabbinical Judaism, and Jews became restricted to onky Rabbinical Judaism.

These followers were part of the universal community of Jesus. “Universal Community” translates as “Ecclesia Catholic” ie Catholic church.

catholics worship the dead, in particular, Mary

I assume that many Catholics have already told you, over the years, that we do not "worship" Mary, we revere her.

Catholics are always correcting that accusation, yet the accusation persists.

I have a hard time explaining it.

I'd flip the script. Are Gentiles who have accepted Christ, Jews? Are Gentiles who have chosen Christ his chosen people, or not? If not, why not?
