Pay attention to those around you on their phones.
Supposedly, the common habit of doomscrolling — endlessly scrolling on your phone, consuming negative content — could indicate someone’s income bracket.
“Do you know what I think will be one of the biggest class indicators going forward, not even that long from now, I think in the very near future? It’s going to be overreliance on the use of technology,” a woman named Jamie said in a recent Instagram post that has since gone viral.
Jamie went on to explain how these days, most people have a dopamine addiction and scroll for hours, including her, because she feels “overwhelmed by everything going on. I need a break.”
She pointed out that those who often doomscroll and need a “break” from well, life, are the ones who are overworked and burned out — which is most likely not those who live a life of luxury.
“People that make more money, are richer, are wealthier… you don’t see them or their kids being iPad kids. You seem them putting their kids into activities…kids that grow up well aren’t the ones overreliant on technology,” she went on to explain.
It makes sense — the more burned out people are from overworking themselves just to make ends meet in this wild economy, the more scrolling they’ll do just to have a mental escape from life’s stresses.
Many people in the comment section of the post were both shocked and in agreement with this revelation.

Seems to me that doomscrolling has two different definitions. One is that you are just surfing and scrolling. Spending too much time on the internet. The other is that you are spending hours scrolling through feeds of negative (doom) content.
Reading articles like this?
Translation: “Teach your kids not to seek the truth on their phone or computer. Keep them ignorant.”
Hahahahahahaha

Ahoy Hoi!
Nonsense. Next they’ll tell you to cut back on the alcohol, sugary sweets, cigars and not take every vaccine, shot and medicine the FDA wants us to.
You doomscrolled through the NY Post article. Admit it!
Could be much like smoking, which didn’t start as such in the US but became very much a marker of low class. Yet, it was almost the opposite in, for example, much of Europe.
Similarly, I’d imagine having and conspicuously using a good phone could be a status symbol in some developing countries.
Yep, but to my defense I was looking for wealth advise. I pretty much knew wasting time is not profitable.
People sit in public alone scrolling their phones so they won’t look alone and unimportant. It doesn’t work.
My phone’s an old style Flip Phone; it doesn’t ‘scroll’.
“People sit in public alone scrolling their phones so they won’t look alone and unimportant. It doesn’t work.”
Pretend - They are important, that are inundated with work-related texts they must sort out. While REALITY is they are scrolling through dumb TikTok videos and dumb you tube shorts. It’s short attention span theater for the ADHD minded.
“”My phone’s an old style Flip Phone; it doesn’t ‘scroll’.””
Same here except mine never leaves my purse except to call the power company when there’s a power outage..kept in my purse if I need help when I’m out in the car.
I’ve had several doctor appointments this year and I say you can tell who the oldest person is in the waiting room. They don’t have a phone in their hands!!
One patient in a waiting room and I made instant friends last year - she was a Braves fan, wearing a shirt with Braves logo, didn’t have a phone in her hands, paid copay with a check. We thought we should get together but she doesn’t drive in the area of the city where I live and I don’t drive where she lives - nothing wrong with the areas, we just don’t stray far from home. She is a veteran, born in Atlanta..I was surprised she isn’t comfortable being away from home. I guess you could call us both “recluses.”
One difference - she doesn’t use email...we talk on the phone.
That’s why I surf the web, to avoid having to talk to people with all their fake laughs.
When your phone becomes a pacifier your to far gone from reality.
I used to post on Facebook. Years ago they kicked me off. They said they would reinstate me if I would..."blah! blah! blah! blah!" I didn't bother. I never missed it, never regretted that foolishness. What a waste of time.
The easy way to tell if someone is rich is if they use the word “summer” as a verb....
I think you see if they are carrying an umbrella or a briefcase. Donald says that’s how to tell.
