How many people receive SNAP benefits in the US every month?
USAFacts. ^ | Oct. 2025 | USAFacts.

Posted on 10/26/2025 3:09:20 AM PDT by daniel1212

About 41.7 million people during fiscal year (FY) 2024. That’s 12.3% of the US population. Participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is determined based on household income levels....

The 12.3% of the population receiving SNAP benefits in FY 2023 is more than double the share in FY 2000 when 6.1% of people were recipients...

SNAP...is administered primarily by state governments...

In FY 2024, New Mexico had the highest share of its population receiving SNAP payments...

Qualifying for SNAP benefits is based on how close a household's income level is to the national poverty line. If expenses aren't considered (i.e., gross monthly income), households must make less than 30% above the federal poverty level. If expenses are considered, households must make less than the federal poverty level.

That’s 41.7 million freeloaders. Many of which are totally useless individuals incapable of taking care of themselves.

All government welfare should be terminated.

The Federal Poverty Level (FPL) is a measure of income u

See Welfare and growing dependency upon government. What determines income in Federal Poverty Guidelines (2022)?

Note " how close."

Seems to me, a federal poverty level doesn’t make a lot of sense. This is reflected for Hawaii and Alaska, but there’s great variation between states in the lower 48 that are not accounted for.

Indeed.

You can’t criticize or investigate the states’s use of the money. “It’s for the children…”

SNAP is the next USAID.

Maybe add peanut butter to your list for school lunches. And let the meat be a generic SPAM-like substance.

The government “commodities” that were given to the families I knew in the ‘50s and ‘60s also included powdered milk and powdered eggs.

Does it matter. EVERYTHING is going to be slapped on the Republicans.

And, the first SNAP “riot” in a grocery store is going to be seen as a “race riot.”

No one should be “wishing” for this stuff to happen.

And the idiots we have running the house and Senate are going to look like heartless fools.

Remember, none of these reactions are based on facts…they are all based on emotions. And the masses only react to how they feel.

True. The Republicans are cowards at heart and the media owns the minds of so many. So short of caving to Chuck how does this get avoided? Chip away at the filibuster once again so we drift ever further to a democracy? Starting to look like a lose/lose situation.

**People should get a BOX of meat, bread, oatmeal, coffee, cheese and figure it out from there.**

I dunno. You’ll see the stuff online for small profit. It’s just too easy. I see the snap signs on my Safeway ad. Too many questionable items available.

Rice and beans are a complete protein. If snap were confined to that and perhaps vegetables we’d see a lower obesity rate.

Understood and agreed. For more context, see my prior post on the SNAP subject.

Specific to your scenario, had government programs not been in place, the public would be stepping up through charities. Prior to the 30s depression, every town had benevolent societies where mid and upper middle class folks took care of the local needy. Now, since the government does it, not as many bother.

Ok. This is a post from Facebook. I know this person, I worked with them. This is their post about SNAP and how the left sees things during this shutdown. Let me know what u think.

“Again, if you think losing SNAP/EBT is okay because it will "Get rid of the Welfare Queens," I'll keep praying for you. "Welfare Queens" aren't the only ones losing food. It's families with disabled members, veterans, elderly, etc. People that HAVE put in their fair share of work to deserve it.

But by all means, if 1% of a population needs to learn a lesson, the rest of the population needs to learn a lesson too. Right? That's the mentality? That's the logic? If they can't earn their way, screw them?

If I were a Pastor and saw some of the things my congregation were posting on Facebook, I would be telling my congregation this morning that all funds within the Church will be used for feeding this community and nothing else. I would ignore all other focus of tithe money to prove a point.
~br> If local Churches aren't willing to do this, I feel better knowing that there are people in this community willing to help those in need. That's the community I remember. That's the community that was present when I was younger. Where's that community now?

Be safe. Be Kind. Be love. Much love and more love, as always.”

I know 4 persons that are
perfectly capable of holdlng
down a paying job, but
instead, choose to sit on
their lazy asses.
My mother raised 5
kids, (granted with food
stamps), while attending
college to obtain a
better lifestyle.
Food benefits have evolved
from a hand up, to a hand
out.

The media always lists percent of population, but paracite/taxpayer ratio is more appropriate.

For the 2021 tax year, approximately 152.3 million individual income tax returns were filed.

41 million paracites : 152 million taxpayers

3.7 taxpayers being forced to support each paracite.

Correct. I always want to help the helpless.

I was at the grocery store and a welfare queen, with four kids in tow, was checking out. All that was purchased with a welfare money card was what the kids had in their hands: chips, soda, candy bars and other candy.

When you do without or when you have to pay YOUR OWN money, it incentivizes you to WORK HARDER. And ‘working harder’ doesn’t mean getting your nails did, your hair did nor sitting for hours getting a prison tattoo.
