Republicans Who Have Rarely Opposed Trump Raise Questions About His Drug War
NEW YORK TIMES ^ | Oct 25 | By Robert Jimison and Megan Mineiro

A growing number of Republicans on Capitol Hill have raised concerns about President Trump’s expanding war against drug cartels carried out without consultation or authorization by Congress, and are pressing for more information and involvement in a campaign whose legal basis remains murky.

Most in the group have not expressed explicit opposition to the strikes that have been carried out so far against boats in the Caribbean Sea and, this week, expanded to the Pacific. The vast majority of Republicans have enthusiastically rallied behind them, and this month, all but two of them voted to block a measure that would terminate the president’s campaign.

But for a G.O.P.-led Congress that has seldom questioned Mr. Trump on any matter, foreign or domestic, the skepticism reflects a rare and potentially significant bit of dissent over a widening war.

“We have oversight responsibilities, and we expect to get our questions answered,” Senator Mike Rounds, Republican of South Dakota and a member of the Armed Services Committee, said in an interview on Wednesday.

I tend to agree. The administration wants Maduro gone, and using the drug war as a pretext. The Iraq WMD comparison can't be ignored. Mexico has some serious drug lab operations going on and of course a large chunk of fentanyl comes from China.

What does that even mean? A quarter of them who?

Rand says in Miami up to a quarter of them when searched are innocent

Again, you’re one who claims anyone who disagrees with Trump is a stone cold loser

Well, there’s like half a dozen in that article raising questions not all the usual suspects

Yes, some good points. The anger then - and policy - is being misdirected

"You dont KNOW for sure they’re drug boats"

America's intelligence system is not going to tell you how they know these are drug boats. I give them the general description of "intelligence system" because who are those people are also kept Top Secret. I used to have a Top Secret clearance and we would never reveal what our mission involved and the restrictions we had over our actions. I bet those involved in identifying which of these boats are carrying drugs have their lives at stake if they revealed what you want to know.

Yes I know the intelligence is top notch and I dont question it

But the stats Rand mentioned: A quarter to a third of suspected drug boats are nothing of the sort

So , you’re probably blowing up the occasional innocent person (one is surely too many?!!) with a blanket policy like this...

Do you want to be involved with stopping a submarine carrying drugs and rounding up those running those things? I would say that is impossible because that’s the nature of an operation in an ocean environment. On land, you can stop a car or corner them in a house. How would you stop a boat or a submarine?

KY can’t count on any of its three leading politicians. People there may have some kind of New York syndrome.

The war on drugs started in 1971 under Nixon. 54 failed years later Trump decided to engage. Awesome!!

I dont have all the answers I just dont think executing them is called for. It’s actually illegal and putting officers at risk and in a terrible position if they get prosecuted years later for extra judicial MURDER. Remember, following orders is no defense.

Why is Trump as the CIC putting them at risk?

Think about it

Maybe I can’t persuade you or many Freepers but im totally opposed to it and once again in a minority

“You dont KNOW for sure they’re drug boats
It’s extra-judicial killing
Why wont you use the correct label?”

You do not know that. So why would anyone use your stupid label?

“Rand says in Miami up to a quarter of them when searched are innocent.”

How do they search smithereens? Certainly the “blowed-up” boaters can’t be searched.

“Drug dealers might be despicable, but they dont deserve to be blown up.”

Come back and post that nonsense when some in your family have their lives destroyed, by addiction or death, due to drugs.

You say, “only Rand has guts.” More accurate, “Rand is nuts.” He has no clue how our Navy would stop those boats so they could take those operators prisoner. These boats are going fast. If they are submarines, how do you get them to the surface? In my navy, you shoot them out of the water from the air.

I do not question the intelligence and im sure they do a through job (there’s lots of them for instance, well paid and very professional)

The policy is just bad and illegal in my opinion and you’re putting good people at risk years later of potential prosecution either in an international court or elsewherre

This could be murder if they get it wrong and it’s already alleged an innocent fisherman was killed.

Think it through like i have and you tend to conclude it’s not a good policy

You talk out of both sides of your mouth. In other words, a liar.

You DO question the intel because your Rand told you to.

How the Hell can Rand claim 1/4 to 1/3 of 10 boats destroyed are not drug boats? Does he not know which ones are or which ones are not?? Why does he guess at the percentage?

Rand is grandstanding and you are a gullible idiot.
