Senate Republicans are discussing voting on a bill that would prevent millions of low-income Americans from losing access to food aid on Nov. 1.
The bill from Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) would fund Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for the duration of the shutdown, which on Wednesday entered its 22nd day. The Department of Agriculture warned earlier this month that if the government shutdown dragged on “there will be insufficient funds to pay full November SNAP benefits for approximately 42 million individuals across the Nation.”
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said in a brief interview that senators were discussing “some options,” though nothing had been scheduled yet.

I’d like to see part of that bill require all congress critters donate their salaries for partial funding and follow with an amendment to change the constitution accordingly.
The silly CR only has 3 weeks left anyway, so it’s time to propose and pass a spending bill that runs through 9/30/2026. Passing separate spending bills for each special interest group is even worse than the 7-week CR lifespan culture that dc is in.

I saw a man who was almost worse than the female ghettopotamus / ghettopotami. Young. Able-bodied. Either black or Hispanic. He said it’s the DUTY of working Americans to support him and his sons. And he NEVER will work.
Oh absolutely, there are indeed a whole lot of scammers scamming the system and they should be prosecuted for fraud. But it is not ALL of them as folks try to claim. In fact around 40% are currently employed and work but just not making enough every month to pay rent and eat healthy. And there is another huge percentage of retired elderly folks who need SNAP assistance because Social Security alone is not enough to cover rent, utilities, and food. There are quite a few right here on the FR in this unfortunate position. Widowers trying to get by on half of their husband’s SS are the hardest hit. They absolutely can’t get by without it. This stereotyping everyone on SNAP as all freeloaders is both stupid and absolutely false.
It is actually embarrassing to see this consensus. Complete ignorance of the real facts.

DO IT! The dems have already said that the SNAP benefits are going to be the lever they try to use to break the Republican demands. This nullifies that “tool”, and puts the dems back under the spotlight.
i want snap to stop. i’d have no problem even if 50% of rural folks depends on it dies of hunger (they need to eat foods that ‘american’ wouldn’t eat)
When I was a kid, many families in our church were low income. They got “commodities” like the proverbial free government cheese, peanut butter, powdered milk, powdered eggs, etc., and they were glad to get it.
Return to that, and only for American citizens, and for three-month periods with quarterly audits.
Stupid idea. Isn’t most of the funding done by states? Or should be. It once was that way.
Same with Medicaid. It’s supposed to be state funded mostly.
