For the third year in a row, a hunter shot and killed a grizzly in self-defense in the Island Park, Idaho, area, south of Yellowstone National Park early Saturday.
The hunter, who Idaho Fish and Game didn’t identify, was cleared of any wrongdoing by the agency.
“After conducting a thorough investigation, it was determined that the hunter acted in self-defense as he was being charged by a bear from a close distance,” the agency stated.
Archery hunters shot and killed grizzlies in self-defense in the Island Park region on Sept. 1, 2024 and Sept. 1, 2023, according to reports.
Archery hunters are allowed to carry handguns for self-defense.
The hunter was hiking through thick timber in the North Antelope Flats area of Island Park, on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest when he encountered the male grizzly, Fish and Game reported.
The bear came out of some brush, charging directly at the hunter, who shot it with his hunting rifle, according to the agency.
The hunter was not injured in the attack.

Not a tree hugger. An animal lover.
Of course, I’ve never been up close and personal with a bear.
Firearms are more effective then spray in protecting ones self.
One only needs to carry spray if one is worried about harming a bear.
I personally have no problems killing bears.
I have done so more then once.
No one enjoys doing it if thats not why they are out there. I would trust a good gun over bear spray though.
The bison would come up to the fence, to say Hi.
Those things are BIG!
Hunter Biden shot a bear?
Bear Spray is fine...
Till it Ain’t!

Caught one yesterday.
“Somebody screamed!”
You forgot to say sarc.
...The garden tool kind...
I have run across three at Glacier. Gladly, they seemed to ignore me. All at about 100 yards.
Griz are the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, run at about 30 MPH, and can be hungry to eat you, or just annoyed and kill you because you’re there.
I recommend substantial precautions against becoming a meal.
Spray is a great idea...
if you’re tired of living.
Up the North Fork on the West side across the valley from Kintla, I ran into three … at once. They were 50 feet from our Crosstrek and huffing from the bushes in three different directions.
Easy enough for us to drive away from. The pedestrian who alerted us to them didn’t seem to mind, and declined our offer of a ride. Which we thought was nuts.
Just explorer the parks with someone you can outrun.
Worst encounter was 1984 in Glacier. Saw a few across the lake at the top of our hike, no big deal.
On the way down, we came around a sharp corner of the trail and were 50 feet from mama and baby Griz. Luckily, we ran in opposite directions.
Go Bison!
Thundering Herd.
They need to stomp the rabbits this weekend.
I like animals too, except for bears.
This whole thing would have been located more clearly if the writer would have written “Island Park, Idaho WEST of Yellowstone.”
