MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- An investigation is underway after a baby was found at the Penn Station subway station in Manhattan on Monday morning.

An anonymous tip led police to the child at the station on W. 34th Street and 7th Avenue just before 9:30 a.m.

The baby girl, described as a newborn, was found wrapped in a blanket at the bottom of a staircase leading to the 1/2/3 train platform.

The baby was taken to a local hospital by police and was said to be conscious and alert.

Her condition was described as stable.

New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow called that "the miracle on 34th Street."

"I'm calling it the 'Miracle on 34th Street,' the FDNY and police department responded, they found a baby that was unattended," Crichlow said. "The baby was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition, we don't have any other additional information on top of that, but just grateful for the work of the NYPD for responding and caring for the baby."

Investigators are looking at video footage from the many cameras throughout the station to determine who left the baby and why.

So glad the baby is alive tonight.

Have a feeling it was one of the homeless who live in Penn Station.

After seeing a Dragnet rerun last year of an abandoned baby in a regular trash can (1969, pre-dumpster era) I searched and found MANY dumpster and other cases around the US, with more dating back years.
Tonight, Google said “several” cases in September, 2025.

So depressing. Some of the babies lived, so that’s good, but we have a system of all fire stations accepting infants without questions and without charges.

Sick. The perp mother and her sperm donor male would never turn in a missing person report so no one would be looking.

Back in the 19th century there were many abandoned babies. Some people had little to eat and would abandon their babies at churches and convents. The Foundling Hospital was founded by the Sisters of Charity in NYC to save them.

People who founded those charities were truly good.

Yes. And people who left their babies at the hospitals and convents weren't necessarily bad. They had little food and needed to feed the other children. At least the abandoned baby could be fed.

A well reasoned explanation. I learned some things from you.

One of the reasons Christians took over the Roman Empire is Christians would rescue abandoned babies.

The Romans had a tradition of exposing unwanted babies to the elements.

I figure the mom so high she didn’t know she was even pregnant. More than likely she was living homeless at Penn Station and selling her body for drugs. Probably does not know who the father is. I could be wrong but considering where the baby was found and the craziness going on at Penn Station?

Lucky for all of us there are cameras all up in that station and I’ll have an update in a week or so.

You're scenario makes perfect sense. I'm sure the mother doesn't know who the father is.
It would be interesting to do a DNA test and find out the father is Chuck Schumer.

Nah, everyone knew that there were certain places where unwanted babies were regularly abandoned - and people who, e.g., couldn't have their own children knew where to look to get some.

I expect a lot of those abandoned babies were also taken in by people to be raised and employed as slaves.
