Did Shohei Ohtani just post the greatest game in MLB history?

There has never been an MLB player like Shohei Ohtani, and he just authored his masterpiece — "The Ohtani Game" — on Friday in Game 4 of the NLCS.

Facing a Milwaukee Brewers team that held the best record in MLB during the regular season, Ohtani posted three mammoth homers in a 3-for-3 night at the plate and struck out 10 in six-plus scoreless innings on the mound, almost single-handedly pushing the Dodgers to a 5-1 win that ended a series sweep.

The greatest game that I remember was a low-scoring game on May 31, 1968 in which the Dodgers squared off against the San Francisco Giants in Dodger Stadium. Dodger pitcher Don Drysdale was seeking to tie a record for the most consecutive shutouts.

As we entered the stadium, a Democrat campaign worker asked us, “do you want to vote for Senator Kennedy?” Sen Robert F. Kennedy (D-NY) was running for president, but I, being a Nixonite, told him, “no, I don’t.”

The Dodgers soon got on the board, while the Giants failed to score, yet the air grew heavy with suspense as the game went on.

Late in the game, the Giants loaded the bases and Dick Dietz came up to the plate. Drysdale hit him with a ball, and it looked as though the shutout streak was broken. However, the umpire ruled that Dietz had leaned into the pitch. In the ensuing rhubarb, the Giants’ manager was tossed out of the game.

Drysdale got out of the inning and got his shutout, the Dodgers winning 3-0. He would score one more shutout the following Tuesday.

Or the one game playoff between the Yankees and the Red Soxes for the AL championship in 1977 or 1978.

Babe was playing in an era where he was on another level than the competition.

Baseball players weren’t being paid half a billion dollars. Many would have other jobs during the off season. Sports conditioning.

Overall, the average player now is 9/10 compared to the 5/10 players back then.

True for most sports. Go look at the size of the average lineman of, say, the Steelers Steal Curtain era (first players to widely use steroids btw) or even back to the Packers (pre steroids). 260, 5 foot linemen.

Now they’re 395 and 6’7”.

But Babe’s stats on their own are for sure most impressive ever.

This was one amazing game from Ohtani. Will see how he develops over time.

He’s the ONLY reason basically that I even follow the Dodgers, the entire organization is far left, hosting trans nonsense and they cater to the left on immigration, but Shohei is just one of the best of all times

He has a new translator since the other one was thrown in prison for stealing his money..Shohei is VERY trusting, seems like a down to earth guy, but also too trusting, allowed that guy to get into his bank account and basically just take whatever he wanted

What about Don Larson’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series?

Taking nothing Away from the Babe, but he played in a segregated league without the talents of black and latino players.

“Meh. For over a half a billion he can learn English like everyone else.”

A lot easier learning a language that shares the same alphabet.

Good post about Cloninger. A post of about only 2 or 3 that actually addressed the question in the headline. Be great, wouldn’t it, if these threads traded on-topic bits of information and opinion that educate. As to your “not even close” opinion, I think you’d have to factor in the stakes, especially the notion that single-handedly Ohtani completed the sweep to the pennant. Be hard to discount the Don Larson perfecto as well. Entirely possible these are top 3 moments. IMO.

Remarkable as the Ohtani performance was, I was struck even more by his graciousness and the absence of showboating that you see in every football game where players taunt the team and the crowd even when their team is losing by 3 scores. Seems like a classy guy.

For 100 years we have been waiting for the next Babe Ruth. The wait is over except he will eventually eclipse the Bambino.

I work with American kids that learn Chinese speaking, reading, listening and writing. Total immersion, which this guy has, and official testing in all four areas

When they go to school they study. They don’t spend their weekends at frat parties. The Chinese kids are shocked that anyone would go to school and get wasted. The Chinese students know English. At the level of being able to study engineering masters Level. At our American university

There are millions of Chinese and Japanese here who speak English

I don’t know why people here want to give this guy fortunate enough to make an absolute fortune from American people some kind of an excuse. For over half a billion he is also a de facto ambassador I expect him to use his position to be an example for people immigrating here or using our country, shoving Americans out of opportunities then going back home to show them we speak English here

I find it disgraceful

I don’t expect people here to do so because this site has been taken over by spoiled leftists

I think he’s obnoxious

Ohtani personally outscored the entire Brewers team.

I’ve tried to find the record my G**gle-fu is weak. I’m wondering if that’s the only time in MLB history when a starting pitcher has gone yard twice. I’ll bet a box of donuts it’s the only time it’s ever happened in post-season play.

Japanese has four (4) alphabets. What could one more hurt?

See post #17

and

“Despite all the firsts, Ohtani’s leadoff shot off Brewers starter Jose Quintana still had a bit of a familiar feel to it. That’s because it was exactly one year ago to the day that Ohtani hit a leadoff home run ... off Quintana (then with the Mets) ... in Game 4 of the NLCS.”
