New findings show how a simple dietary change that increases fiber intake can reshape gut bacteria to prevent sugar from damaging the liver and causing disease.
"We found that consuming a type of dietary fiber called inulin, abundant in vegetables, changes the bacteria in the gut to promote the consumption of harmful dietary fructose," says Cholsoon Jang, Ph.D.
"This leads to less fructose spillover to the liver, preventing fructose-induced fatty liver disease and insulin resistance. Inulin also helps the liver make more of its antioxidant to prevent inflammation."
Revealing how common dietary fiber—inulin—reshapes gut bacteria to improve metabolic health is an important step forward in helping people avoid liver damage and insulin resistance.
"We focused on these diseases that occur in non-obese individuals, which are particularly hard to diagnose due to their normal body weight," says Jang. "Our study provides a mechanistic insight into how fiber protects our health from harmful nutrients like fructose."
Researchers found that inulin stimulates the breakdown of dietary fructose by small intestinal gut bacteria, reducing fructose spillover to the colon and liver. This action prevents fructose-induced hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL) and augments hepatic serine/glycine production for antioxidant synthesis, protecting the liver from lipid accumulation and oxidative stress.
Their findings open the door to preventive medicine based on dietary choices that promote healthy gut bacteria. Going forward, the researchers plan to evaluate the effects and mechanisms of other abundant dietary fibers on fructose-induced diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease and cancer.
"By identifying specific gut bacteria and metabolic pathways involved, our findings can guide personalized nutrition strategies," says Jang.

I very much believe we have a solution inside of us that our general lack of fiber has nearly starved to death.
I would say you could get additional fiber sources that could even more helpful. I do encourage using Keto breads like Hero or Sola Bread-type breads. They taste good and remove extra carbs from our diet, replaced with no calories, due to the resistant starch used.
My colon pains started a short while after a ten day course of antibiotics. I felt pains each corner of my large intestine and in the whole last portion, as well. It wasn't going away. I took probiotics and had some prebiotic fiber, but very small amounts. I did try to get more dairy, but it didn't seem to work. Moving over to getting 35+ grams of soluble fiber a day from Keto bread products made it progressively better, until every last pain went away—permanently. Even when I don't eat the fiber for over a week at a time, I am still fine.
Again, I can't stress it enough that fiber is really needed by the vast majority of people, and they just don't know it.

Funny you should say that, I didn’t really put my finger on it that these high fiber / low carb breads could help my digestive issues. But I have TRIED to eat them more so just trying to keep the weight down (not too successful) But I do buy low carb tortillas at most any stores. The sandwich bread and hamburger / hot dog buns are pricey and brands that don’t taste like crap are not easily found + pricey. Netrition.com has a brand I really like “Aunt Milles” So I stocked up the freezer a few weeks back when they had a free shipping weekend. Tonight I’m making “Fiber Gourmet brand” high fiber Mac / cheese. It’s really good in my opinion, less so the wife.
