Amid a wave of U.S. military strikes in the Caribbean and plans for covert operations in Venezuela, Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., is leading a bipartisan effort to force a vote to stop President Trump from unilaterally declaring war on the South American nation.
Kaine, a longtime proponent of Congress' powers to declare war, filed the resolution late Thursday, a move that will force the Senate to take up the legislation after a 10-day waiting period. Sens. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Rand Paul, R-Ky., co-sponsored the plan.
Kaine said concerns about war in the Latin American region are growing.
"The pace of the announcements, the authorization of covert activities and the military planning makes me think there's some chance this could be imminent," Kaine told reporters.

Go to hell! As usual, Rand Traitor Paul sides with the Dems.
Rand is an f’ing traitor to America because he sides with the democrat communists. It is that simple. If they win, America is cooked. He knows this. I guess he believes it won’t effect his life of privilege. There will be no Constitution, no Bill of Rights, no America. Rand and his pocket Constitution will ride off into the sunset and as his limo goes by, Randfan will call out to him to come back and Rand will just laugh at his useful idiot.
The communists in congress will do what they can to save Maduro, but he has passed his sell-by date. The fleet is there as a psy-op. He will probably go out the old-fashioned way, a CIA-backed coup. Since it’s deniable, congress can’t stop it. At this stage Trump isn’t going to stop.
I imagine the suitcases of money have already been delivered, the Delta guys have been tracking Maduro’s men for months, and one of Maduro’ generals is getting ready to make his move.
>> I think that’s fair and I hope some of you agree.....
I think that stinks and I agree that Rand Kaine, dope-addled pervs separated at birth, deserve each others’ company.
Interesting. I didn’t know that.
Commies, Maduro and Chavez overstayed their welcome in Venezuela for at least 25 years.
Time for the reckoning!
congress has the authority to declare war.
But since WWII, there were no declared wars fought anywhere.
It is all just military actions.
Anyway. Congress is quite slow.
In the time of ballistic nukes, in case of nuclear attack, military cannot wait until congress gathers, debates and votes.
So military actions were in emergency delegated to president, the commander in chief.
>> If Congress declared war, and the President refused to fight, could they force him? They have no power to do so.
+1
“The Congress can’t think the world is dangerous enough to fund a $1 trillion military and then say, “But you can’t use it without our say so.””
Congress are pretty close to being totally dysfunctional in most regards.
That may be part of the strategy. The “leak” puts pressure on the Maduro government. They can’t ignore it they have to react in some way. It also encourages the opposition which just got a Nobel Peace prize. The recipient dedicates it to Trump. More interesting pressure!
International conflict isn’t just fleets, soldiers & planes it’s information warfare. Modernizing Clauswitz diplomacy by other other means!
I don’t agree. They’ve dragged their feet in confirming his nominees, wouldn’t recess so Trump could appoint his nominees, and Grassley is using the Blue Slip rule to thwart his judicial nominees, but they want to force a vote on a non-existent war with Venezuela? Repukes in the Senate never cease to be a-holes.
The three biggest turds in the Senate introduced and sponsored this Bill: Tim Kaine, Adam Schiff and Rand Paul. Two RATS and a Repuke who sides with RATS.
Senate passing anything doesn’t make it a law.
The House has to pass it too and the president has to sign it.
Not gonna happen.
Rand Paul is a libertarian and condones drugs. Blow the Venezuelans up and their dope. Rand needs to grow about 7 inches in height. We might take him seriously.
I wish yours was the majority opinion here. I wonder what the reaction would have been if Obama or Biden had taken a similar course of action?
“I wonder what the reaction would have been if Obama or Biden had taken a similar course of action?”
Exactly right. What makes me mad is that we were lied to. This was NEVER about drugs. It was always about political posturing from the beginning. I called this right here as soon as the first ships sailed to the region.
It is my firm belief that there has to be a damn good reason for sending U.S.troops to die on foreign soil;and the actions of the Venezuelan government or the cartels it supports do not meet that mark.
Calling for an ill conceived war that advances the profits of a few at the expense of the lives of U.S. troops is not a Conservative value.
Wouldn't want to interrupt the supply lines...
I guess NeoCons are like zombies. Unless you destroy the brain they will always rise up to eat the living.
