AI’s Bandwidth Boom: How Artificial Intelligence Is Reshaping Internet Usage
GCG ^ | Aug 6, 2025 | Lara Mayes

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a futuristic buzzword — it’s an everyday business tool. From generative AI platforms like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot to machine learning models powering real-time analytics, customer service, and cybersecurity, AI has gone mainstream.

But while most of the conversation has focused on data privacy, automation, and ethics, there’s another massive shift underway: AI is transforming the way we use the internet.

As organizations across every industry embrace AI on a scale, they’re also encountering a new challenge: exponential growth in data transfer, processing requirements, and bandwidth demand. This is not a theoretical problem — it’s already happening. And IT leaders must start preparing now.

AI doesn’t just require computing power — it demands consistent, high-volume connectivity. Whether you’re using a generative model for content creation or deploying real-time fraud detection tools, AI workloads are data-intensive by nature.

So let’s think of the why and how?

Are all ai alike?

--- "Will your server allow you to review your stats the last several months? Go check, I'll bet your hit traffic has doubled or tripled in the last six months... "

I guess I'm the odd sample. Actually it's decreased since January to about 70 percent today of the January numbers, and the largest source of crawlers seems to be our very own nation.

“Are all ai alike?”

They can indeed be manipulated to control information. Every one of them. So it all depends on who makes it and who controls it. I don’t think anyone of them can be trusted to be accurate and factual... Not even Elon’s, it has had it’s huge share of issues too.

Absolutely my privilege. I am trying to supply all the ammo I can to anyone willing to use it and defeat this enemy of the internet. :)

The people working with the ai? Who are they?

What do they do?

Programming the LLM?

We pay a flat rate too. But if the demand goes over a certain limit then the extra bandwidth is another charge tacked on. So... It is not in their greedy interest to filter, they are hoping AI shoves us up over that limit.

And those who pay for how much is used a month surely are not going to get any help from their host. Their host stands to double their profits from this new extra AI load.

Are the AI companies going to compensate us back for that extra bandwidth they are making us pay for? Why should we pay so that someone else can use it for free and the tech company can profit?

“Programming the LLM?”

Yes, Example, Grok has to be perpetually programed and trained:

Elon Musk Fires 500 Staff at xAI, Puts College Kid in Charge of Training Grok

It is not “build and forget”. It is perpetually being “adjusted” and “corrected”.

I was just looking through my OED last week.

Wikipedia is a waste excerpt for film and series information.

but we are going to absolutely pay dearly for it later. If the FR has the normal rates and plan their host provides they are already paying dearly for the extra bandwidth AI bots are eating up. It just isn’t right at all...

.......

Would you please explain what you mean?

The FR is now hosted by a third party. Has been for quite awhile now. When I searched out who it was I read their hosting plans and rates because I was interested in possible hosting for myself. I was not really happy with mine at the time. But all I could find from that host were “pay per how much bandwidth a month you use” plans.

So unless they were able to get a flat rate deal instead? The more bandwidth they use a month the more they are charged per month. Which means when AI crawls put an extra load on the server bandwidth then the FR has to pay for that extra load. AI is stealing Data, and the FR is the one footing the bill for the extra bandwidth for them to steal it. It is costing the FR money they should not have to pay because of that extra AI load.

I am currently fortunate that we have a flat rate plan so the extra load has not cost us anything extra yet. But it is killing our site, it is almost like a DDoS attack during peak internet use times of the day. So I am going to have to shut down all bot access. The FR could do this, but it would also shut down their search engine bot access which is advertising.

They are putting domain owners between a rock and a hard place. Hosts should absolutely be helping their customers with this new burden and problem. Unfortunately “their” cure is to force you to use ClouFlare. And CloudFlare is a tool currently being used for information control and censorship. It literally gave the government a kill switch and control over information.

So CloudFlare is not a good cure at all... This is all by design...

Asking Grok to find answers for you shrinks your brain. Google your answers the old fashioned way.

I agree. But I’m not sure how much better the sources Google hands out are. They have pretty much ruined the opportunity to get any unbiased facts.
