Derry Township OKs solar farm permit over objections by neighbors

The Derry Township Supervisors on Tuesday approved a permit for a proposed solar farm along Newhouse Road after hearing objections to the project from several neighboring residents.

The supervisors indicated they aren’t any more pleased about the proposed 27-acre solar array than residents are.

But they said they are issuing the permit because the plan for installing 11,000 solar panels meets the requirements of a related township ordinance.

“I’m like you,” Supervisor Don Kepple told solar farm opponents attending the township meeting. “I wouldn’t want this in my backyard. How can you say ‘no’ when everything is done right down the line?

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Don't get it, grew up in the burgh area, and sunny days are few and far between.

Wasn't a solar farm in the sunny Calfornia desert declared a failure.

Pennsylvania has plenty coal and gas.

They should be THANKFUL that they didn’t get a Battery Farm as they tend to be a bit ‘lively’ at times.

“….meets the requirements of a related township ordinance.”
So the town supervisor was asleep when that ordinance was passed?

Snakes, all of them.

Not a photovoltaic "solar farm" in CA, but a central tower with mirrors (called "heliostats") reflecting sun onto a boiler in the tower. The boiler makes steam that drives a steam turbine. Totally different tech.

I pity people that get this green crap sited next to them. Wind farms are all over the west. You may have had a family ranch for 150 years and then these hideous monstrosities move in.

11,000 solar panels on a 27-acre plot is still a hideous eyesore. You see these all over the west, too, and in the most unlikely places.

Murdering fetuses, killing birds, poisoning farm land, fostering power outages, and discouraging food production are all part and parcel of that “progress” they keep talking about.

These solar panel farms are heating the planet in an unnatural fashion... Just like these huge wind farms are screwing with the natural weather patterns... These green forms of energy are likely hurting the planet more than they are saving it.

Solar farm, big ugly warehouse, whatever...if it is “use by right” in the zoning ordinance it MUST be approved or the Township and its supervisors (as individuals) can be sued.

Best to pay close attention to all the “permitted uses” when a zoning ordinance is updated.

Most people are ho-hum about those—until...

Again, too many people are incredibly STUPID. No common sense. No critical thinking skills. Incapable of rational thought.

The more they build these things, the more problems they are discovering with the use of them. If the colleges were doing their job, they would be educating people about the dangers of building these things, not teaching the technololgy of how to build them. As long as there a profit to be made building this crap, nobody seems to care what happens afterwards about the cost of running them....or the associated dangers with some of this....or the waste of the land that could be used for other purposes....or the blackouts when they fail.
