Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Friday the Department of Defense is forming a new counternarcotics joint task force in order to “crush” drug cartels in the Caribbean Sea.
Hegseth said the new task force, established at the direction of President Trump, will operate in the U.S. Southern Command (Southcom) area of responsibility.
“At the President’s direction, the Department of War is establishing a new counter-narcotics Joint Task Force in the @SOUTHCOM area of responsibility to crush the cartels, stop the poison and keep America safe,” Hegseth said in a post on the social platform X.
“The message is clear: if you traffic drugs toward our shores, we will stop you cold,” he added.
The Pentagon referred The Hill to SOUTHCOM when reached for comment. The Hill has contacted SOUTHCOM for additional information.
The formation of the task force comes as the Trump administration has launched four strikes against alleged drug trafficking boats in the Caribbean Sea in recent weeks. The strikes have killed 21 in total, according to the administration.
The most recent strike, which occurred earlier this month, blew up the vessel — purportedly carrying narcotics in international waters — and killed four people, Hegseth said at the time.

How do you eradicate a culture that has been finding ways to get high for thousands of years? Humans have always found ways to indulge in substances to alter their state of mind and that includes just about every culture on earth. Alcohol is the “accepted” and mostly legal substance around the world and marijuana increasingly closing in fast. But opium has been around for centuries and native Americans had/has peyote. Then there is that weed they chew I believe in parts of Africa. So it seems to be human nature to find ways to get high, how the hell do you eradicate that.

Just say NO has now become Just Go Boom!

To some extent that is true. before we had laws against these drugs they were mostly available to anyone. A certain segment of the population used and abused them regularly but many did not because they saw the danger and injury it caused. These are the people that excelled and built this world and our country and didn’t need laws not to use these drugs to excess. So, what is the answer. Hopeless people are going to find a way to destroy themselves one way or another, some take the shortcut and just off themselves, others with less courage just do it slowly, one puff, drink, snort or pill at a time. maybe we should just let them and shrink the gene pool.
Very low in Singapore.
You mean like JIATF-South, Pete? No one in the Pentagon told you about JIATF-South?
It would take an effort similar in scope to the government’s elimination of Christianity. While not fully successful yet, the culture of today is noticably less religious than it was in 1965 when I became aware of the effort.
None but hey are wreaks to begin with mostly fit to sink on their own like the Chinese subs.
We could station troops in Guyana for effect and it could be paid for in oil where we profit big-time. Make the base a resort for R & R military folk. Wouldn’t even have to arm them. Maduro would know better than to mess with the Monroe Doctrine.
