In response to the Ole Miss riot of 1962, President John F. Kennedy deployed nearly 31,000 troops, including units from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, to restore order.

The Ole Miss riot of 1962 (September 30 – October 1, 1962), also known as the Battle of Oxford, was a race riot that occurred at the University of Mississippi—commonly called Ole Miss—in Oxford, Mississippi, as segregationist rioters sought to prevent the enrollment of African American applicant James Meredith. President John F. Kennedy eventually quelled the riot by mobilizing more than 30,000 troops, the most for a single disturbance in United States history.

In the wake of the Supreme Court's 1954 decision Brown v. Board of Education, Meredith tried to integrate Ole Miss by applying in 1961. When he informed the university that he was African American, his admission was delayed and obstructed, first by school officials and then by Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett. In a bid to block his enrollment, Barnett had Meredith temporarily jailed. Multiple attempts by Meredith, accompanied by federal officials, to enroll were physically blocked. Hoping to avoid violence and ensure Meredith's enrollment,

NPR loves using this headline. They could mention in the headline that it’s a 50 year old story

It is fully integrated.

Is npr still getting government money to hate our country

Ole Miss is one of the best schools right now. In every way. Too much partying - it’s an American school and Americans are being raised to be stopped but this is among factions easy to avoid

NPR. Sigh. To think that I actually once thought that they had class.

I grew up just a few miles north of Ole Miss. I was seven in 1962.

I still remember seeing the convoys of ‘Army Men’ (National Guard troops), passing through town on their way to Oxford....................

For some reason, NPR didn’t mention Ross Barnett’s party affiliation. Just in editorial oversight, I’m sure.

Federal funding for NPR is one of the reasons the far-left is shutting down funding the government this month.

Without federal funding, how can NPR/PBS race-baiting survive?

Fifty years ago — Oct. 1, 1962

More than a decade off. I guess NPR flunked arithmetic.

I’m sure the article mentions it was Democrats who opposed integration.

LOL.

Just kidding. nPr never tells the truth.

Interestingly, after Meredith was admitted to Ole Miss, the campus had a surge of applicants who were obese, white females with red hair, freckles, and hoop earrings...

Oxford town, Oxford town
Everybody's got their heads bowed down
Sun don't shine above the ground
Ain't a-goin' down to Oxford town
He went down to Oxford town
Guns and clubs followed him down
All because his face was brown
Better get away from Oxford town

Oxford town around the bend
Come to the door, he couldn't get in
All because of the colour of his skin
What do you think about that, my friend?

Me, my gal, and my gal's son
We got met with a tear gas bomb
Don't even know why we come
We're goin' back where we came from

Oxford town in the afternoon
Everybody's singin' a sorrowful tune
Two men died 'neath the Mississippi moon
Somebody better investigate soon.
