Manisha Puppala, an Indian national who recently graduated with a master’s degree in tech management from the Rochester Institute of Technology, planned to apply for an H-1B work visa to remain in the U.S. after her studies.
Now that the Trump administration has announced a $100,000 fee for new H-1B applications, her future is in doubt. Puppala, who took on $120,000 in loans to study in America and has been working at a Boston firm on a permit that allows foreign students to work temporarily in the U.S., had dreamed of running her own startup.
“What do I do now?” she asked herself when the news broke.

No more coming to the US to get Masters degrees from degree mills, and using that to game the immigration system.
I voted for this. Maybe an American can now take that job she was going to steal
Give these jobs to American kids finishing college that actually want the American dream.
Manisha, assuming you are honest about your startup ambitions and not using it as an excuse to get sympathy, you will do well in India. Top VC firms from the Bay Area ( Sequoia, Accel, Lightspeed and others ) have set up shop in Bangalore and other places and money is flooding in. Bangalore is one of the hottest startup cities in the world ! If you have it in you, you won't miss out on your startup dream by not being here. But we are full. Bye.
The Indian Sob Stories are really going into overdrive.
WSJ is terrified that their serf class is going away.
Just wait until Friday after the H1B pimps at Amazon, Microsoft and the others respond to the Senate Judiciary Committee inquiry. We ain’t seen nothing yet.
And therefore widening for Americans.
The Path to the American Dream Is Widening for American Tech Workers
MAGA!
I’m so sick of this incessant whining about the AMERICAN dream and foreign born H1B visa holders.
Those Indians who come over here are NOT impoverished. Not ONE of them have ever looked or acted like they ever wanted for anything in their entire lives.
Make your own country better if you like the US so much. But stop trying to make the US into India. We don’t want your caste system. We’re not interested, thankyouverymuch.
Yes, you hit the nail on the head there with the Master’s from diploma mills and gaming the immigration system, OPT, etc., from there.
There was a time in the computer history back in the 90s, where legacy computer programming was still out there, still in use, yet the US did not maintain, or was quickly losing the expertise on those legacy systems and programming.
Enter technology based workers from India familiar with the legacy programming and hardware. They bridged the gaps. But those days are behind us. It didn’t hurt that India was the world’s largest democracy either... just sayin’
Congratulations on your degree from R.I.T. Manisha. Great school.
Hope it serves you well. In India.
When you get home, write a thank you letter to the U.S. citizen who didn’t get to attend.
Go home and Make India Great . MIG
What are you saying exactly?
No citizenship, no dream.
These people are parasites. They'd rather suck the blood out of Americans than fix their own country.
WSJ had been completely compromised by foreign influence. F them all.i hate that Fox WSJ show. Gigot? Puke
Puppala, who took on $120,000 in loans...
Will not bother to even try paying them back once she goes back to India.
Why American lenders make such stupid loans is beyond me.
