When Qian Zhang boarded a flight from Shanghai to Boston at age 18, she thought she was heading toward the "best version" of her life. It was 2009, during President Barack Obama's first term, when the U.S. economy was rebounding and opportunities for well-educated workers seemed plentiful.
She was bound for Dartmouth College, a top choice for many Chinese students, and later found her way to Harvard Business School.
Qian embraced the American dream: the promise of equal opportunity, a country that rewards talent and hard work, and a place where global citizens like her could belong.
By her early 30s, she was a vice president at a global firm in Boston, earning six figures a year. But behind the glittering resume was a reality defined by her immigration status.
Like hundreds of thousands of foreign professionals, Qian lived on an H-1B work visa — the document that tethered her job, her ability to travel, and her entire sense of security to the grace of her employer. "Your entire life is tied to your job," she said. "If you lose the job, you lose the visa. If you lose the visa, you lose the country."
At first, she pushed aside her anxieties. She bought property, built friendships, and told herself she was no different from her American colleagues.
But each year brought fresh reminders: vacations cut short to fly back to China for visa paperwork, discreet job searches because changing employers required fresh visa sponsorships, and the constant fear that one misstep could unravel her life. "The H-1B made me feel like a second-class citizen," she said.

Sweetheart, you were never a citizen, not even a 2nd class one.
“The H-1B made me feel like a second-class citizen,”
———————
The problem is that she was never a citizen, and should never have been made to feel as such. The very statement shows what a mistake the administration of this program has been. These visas were intended to fill a relatively small number of jobs for which few or no American citizens were available. They were not intended to be a cost, saving measure for industry, at the expense of American workers. Good riddance to this woman, and those like her who we’re brought to this country solely to save American industry money at our expense.
Don’t feel too bad for her, from the article:
“Her years in America gave her financial security — she graduated when the economy was strong, saved responsibly and invested prudently. That cushion allowed her to start over. “I was lucky,” she said. “I caught the right wave.””
Sweetiepie ...
NOBODY CARES what you feel like.
Reality matters, honeybunch: That H-1B made you NOT A CITIZEN AT ALL. "Global citizen" is a bunch of meaningless balderdash. You're Chinese. Now it's time for you to go home.
'Bye.
Go to Canada!
I don’t disagree with you. Your point is correct. See my post #35.
I’m just pointing out what I know, which is that companies continue to offshore not only manufacturing but also design and engineering.
Can someone explain to me why these people are on visas for decades? Why don’t they become citizens? Is it that difficult?
The confederation that is Canada is in the process of dissolution. The western provinces have created WEXIT that is the political mechanism for creating a new country that can morph into an American Territory and possible statehood.
The Wexit provinces are Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia and Yukon. Manitoba, BC and Yukon are not as certain as Alberta and Saskatchewan. Both have enough signatures to assure a vote on leaving.
Any country having any of their citizens declared refugees is immediately shunned and declared a NO GO ZONE, meaning all air, train, and auto travel ceases, and all trading of goods and services ends.
Im all for them starting a new country but not joining us with statehood. They are all liberal compared to us. They are used to everything free like healthcare. They’ll vote for that chit here.
So the same people (democrats and their media whores) endlessly bash America as the worst place on earth (HT brother married Ilhan Omar) but now, suddenly, when immigrants have to get out it’s the most wonderful place and these poor poor immigrants need to stay here.
Good riddance.
I want trump to END the program completely as he promised in 2016:
2nd class citizenship?? How about no class citizenship as in not a citizen unless one applies. 15 plus years seems time enough. She is a first class citizen of China, so, she is a citizen somewhere. Refugee status from what BTW? Working for a bank in Boston. There are banks in Hong Kong I believe.
Perhaps Swalwell could offer her a “position”.
The reason they are leaving is because they want to get rid of the leftist wing shackles.
I suspect statehood may never happen. However, they can become some sort of American territory.
Then you should have applied - LONG AGO - for a first class citizen journey.
Sorry about your 'feelings' but you are a second class VISITOR.
Since she is not a citizen, Qian doesn’t even rate second class.
Actually, you weren’t a citizen at all
I don’t understand why non-citizens are allowed to buy property.
Conservative Canadians are what you would think of as moderate Democrats here.
