I bought a Tesla

Posted on 10/06/2025 1:07:19 PM PDT by Controlling Legal Authority

I bought a Tesla 2 months ago, still learning new things about it. I didn’t do it “for the environment”. Strictly a transportation issue. I get the, uh, impression that more of us here than not are not a fan so I thought I’d throw out my admittedly brief personal experience if anyone here is curious.

So far so good. I did a 10 hour round trip last week. Learned a bit about the FSD on that trip. Then what prompted this post is that a few minutes ago I realized that the car came with some sort of plastic cover on part of the rear doors. I asked Grok about it and was told it is included on cars sold in the Midwest. So still learning about features (original and added by software update) for two months now.

The people I know who have them are very happy with them. I do not know if they are just self-justifying or what, I have not performed the psychological probe. Nor do I know if they are happy after 5 years of ownership because it hasn’t been 5 years since they bought them.

I’m sorry that you bought a Tesla.

I’ve had the Y for 1 yr with FSD. I’d never go back to ICE. FSD does 95 pct of the driving, anywhere, on any road or street.
Only problem is if you don’t have a garage with a 240v electric dryer type outlet. Relying on superchargers is time consuming and expensive (nullifies any savings compared to petrol). Maintenance costs zero. Insurance costs.. Very high. So don’t buy it to save $ or save “the planet.” like any car, buy it of its comfortable and maybe you like 0-60 in 4 seconds. FSD is a steal at 99. Month. You get 1 month free. Then pay as you go.

“The most recent issue I’ve seen is CARFAX may give a clean bill of health”

CARFAX showed an accident.

Got it new. In late July they still had a “sale” going on new vehicles on the lot.

Don’t park it inside your garage. Leave it out on the curb, or at least away from your house a little bit.

My company F-150 can get more than 900 miles on a single tank of gas. My last one finally gave out after 17 years and 380,000 miles. I have no confidence that any EV could give me that kind of performance.

Well, you are obviously well-established if the increased TCO is not a concern. Premium tire prices, increased electricity bill, higher insurance premiums for the car and your home, urban parking fees (many parking garages will not allow EVs) so add in some Uber, etc.

IMHO if one simply *must* have some kind of EV then the Toyota hybrids are the way to go. At least they have a small ICE that can move the vehicle when freezing weather kills the battery.

The transmission lasted 380,000 miles?

I agree on the FSD.. that is the main reason I got it. I was able to get 3 months of FSD using a referral code. I will definitely extend it. Can’t decide whether to go monthly or buy it outright. Leaning to the monthly for now.

“My son lives in Arlington, VA and when they had a blizzard, there was a 20 mile traffic jam and the Tesla’s made it worse “

Nope.

Original powertrain. I have had two Fords give me 350,000+ miles on their original powertrains.

It doesn’t fit my needs. I’m a one vehicle (well 2 if you count the vintage collector car) so need it to be economical and have butt-loads of space behind the front seat for the migration to and from Florida twice per year. Stopping regularly to charge would not be practical. The migration is tied into side trips to visit family and friends so it ends up being 3,000 miles each way +/-.

I got a 2025 Santa Fe. The new squared off design means lots of storage back there. The hybrid gets about 34 MPG on the highway and 40+ around town.

I did have a fellow stop by the neighborhood garage sale a couple weeks ago with a CyberTruck. He showed us the vehicle and my first impression was, it’s HUGE. It doesn’t seem that big driving down the road. I was impressed.

For me, a safe car is always the first priority, and a reliable car is second. I don’t care what it looks like or who makes it. I do care about the price tag.

If a car breaks down a lot, or needs a lot of attention, it’s not the right car for me.

My only experience with an EV is a friend who owns one. She was constantly worried about taking the shortest route, and not getting stuck in traffic. In other words, getting home before she had no power to her car.

I don’t think I can live like that.

I don’t believe you got 380000 miles on the original trans.
